Long a 24-hour hangout, Palo Alto's Happy Donuts to shorten hours

Starting Monday, March 16, people will no longer be able to satisfy their middle-of-the-night cravings for crullers and doughnut holes at Happy Donuts in Palo Alto.

The 24/7 doughnut shop at 3916 El Camino Real is moving to new hours: 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. Signs advertising the shift in hours are posted throughout the shop.

The owner could not be reached for comment and the reasons for the new hours are unclear. An employee said she believed it was due to slow business overnight and difficulty hiring sufficient staff.

Happy Donuts closed briefly in 2014 before reopening under new management.

Other local 24-hour options include L&L Hawaiian BBQ and Jack in the Box in Palo Alto and Chuck's Donuts in Redwood City.
