City to host public meeting on library renovations

Tonight's meeting will focus on plans to rebuild Main Library, updates on Mitchell Park and Downtown branches

Plans to rebuild and expand Palo Alto's busy Main Library will be on public display tonight (Tuesday), when the city hosts a community meeting to discuss the status of the city's ambitious library-renovation project.

The Main Library is scheduled to be the last of three libraries to undergo major reconstruction thanks to a $76 million bond city voters approved in November 2008. Work has already begun on the Downtown Library and the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center.

Construction on Main Library is scheduled to begin in 2012, after the new Mitchell Park branch opens. The Downtown Library is scheduled to reopen next year.

Palo Alto officials and staff from Group 4 Architecture, which is designing all three of the new libraries, will discuss the two ongoing library projects and preview the coming changes at the Main Library at tonight's meeting. They will also discuss possible sites for a temporary library that could be opened once Main Library shuts down for construction.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Main Library, 1213 Newell Road.
