Palo Alto police arrested a homeless man who they said burglarized a house in the city's Crescent Park neighborhood late Sunday afternoon.

Police said Jeremy Safier, 35, broke into a house in the 1400 block of University Avenue at about 3:20 p.m. Sunday and allegedly stole some magazines, a backpack and kitchen cabinet hardware from the house, police Lt. Doug Keith said. The house was undergoing construction at the time and was unoccupied, Keith said.

Safier then allegedly went outside and threw garbage cans on the ground, creating a disturbance that alerted neighbors. A neighbor then called police, who arrived minutes later and made the arrest, Keith said. All stolen property was recovered, he said.

The Sunday burglary did not appear to be related to the attempted robberies that occurred in Palo Alto earlier this month, Keith said. Both of those incidents involved armed men who engaged in brief scuffles with victims before running away.
