Groupon, a Chicago-based company that specializes in "daily deal" coupons for groups of consumers, is expanding its presence in Palo Alto, the company announced Wednesday (Dec. 1).
The company already has a staff of about 25 in Palo Alto, with local operations focusing on the mobile and data services. The company's expansion will push the number of employees to more than 100, the company said.
Groupon's expanded Palo Alto team will work with the Chicago team on all product technology, according to the company's statement. The move will give the company "two regions from which to attract top recruits," the statement said.
Groupon's building is located on the 400 block of Sherman Ave., in the California Avenue business district. Thomas Fehrenbach, Palo Alto's economic development manager, lauded the company's decision to enlarge its Palo Alto operation.
"We love to have innovative start-up companies that bring new ideas to town and help keep it vibrant," Fehrenbach said.

3 things need to happen before they are allowed to move in:
1) The company must guarantee no new net car trips into Palo Alto
2) the company must provide housing for their employees
3) a study must be carried out to show that the company moving here will not negatively affect the quality of life in College Terrace

Relax... they don't have THAT many employees. Should all new restaurants and Starbucks require housing for employees? I am pretty sure we could find that many residents OUT OF WORK right now. Stop worrying. I agree with the last poster- go to RWC or Menlo! Steer clear of the naysayers. And Groupon- don't send any deals out for businesses bordering the College Terrace neighborhood..God forbid, they increase sales and bring in MORE business.

This is great news for Palo Alto; I'd like to think that we live in a community that wants to continue to be considered cutting edge with which businesses come here. And we're only talking about 75 extra employees, not thousands. I'm sure the businesses on Cal Av will appreciate the extra foot traffic.

Well, Facebook and GOOGLE before them saw the light and are planning to move out of Palo Alto, I just wonder how long Groupon will stay!! Anyway we'll take your tax dollars while you're here; just tell your employees not to drive into College Terrace!!!
