Palo Alto police arrested a 14-year-old boy Wednesday (Dec. 29) who they say robbed another boy of his cell phone on Park Boulevard and committed a similar crime in July.
The boy, a Palo Alto resident whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, allegedly walked up to the victim, also 14, while the victim was sending a text message on his cell phone in the 2300 block of Park Boulevard at about 1:45 p.m. He demanded the phone. When the victim refused, he grabbed the phone from the victim's hand and ran off, police said.
The victim and a witness allegedly chased the boy for a short while and described him to officers at a Hispanic male, about 14 years old, in a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a white shirt draped around his neck. Shortly after that, an officer saw a teenager matching the description walking near the California Avenue Caltrain station.
While the officer was talking to the boy, another officer drove the victim to the interview site. The victim identified the boy as the person who robbed him. Police arrested the suspect and, after looking through his possessions, found the victim's cell phone.
Police later interviewed the suspect and identified him as the person who also stole an iPod and cash from another juvenile victim on July 10.

This type of robbery happens on a weekly basis at the middle schools and the high schools. No newspaper reports ever - do we need the above report? Just my initial thought.

As long as thuggery keeps being glorified in the media this kind of behavior will only escalate.

Are the kids who commit these crimes "on a weekly basis" arrested by the police? If we don't treat criminals like criminals, then they will continue committing their crimes.

Crescent Park Dad, outright muggings don't occur at the high schools and middle schools. I'm a Paly student, and had an iPod Touch recently stolen. However, the robberies at the school typically involve somebody breaking into a locker and removing the valuables, or removing items from an unattended backpack. As far as I know, the students know better than to approach somebody and mug them at school.

I lived in that neighborhood, on that block, for a few years until it became clear that the crime rate was increasing and there was open drug dealing and prostitution. Not surprised it happened there.

These entitled brats should be named. The laws designed to 'protect' juveniles by not allowing their names to be released only enables these kids. I have met kids in the court system who possess knowledge of the law only second to a criminal attorney. Maybe the embarassment of having their name out there would be a lesson well learned.

Crescent Park Dad, you echoed my thoughts. Then, I thought, well, w/the way people in PA & local media harp on anything negative outta EPA, plus their assumptions about people from EPA, this is kind of deserved. But, that's sort of mean-spirited of me - so what's the media's excuse?

The little thief should be placed in a public pillory, next to the Cal ave fountain, publicly shamed, and then permit citizens to thrown rotten tomatoes at him. Then, make him clean up the mess, and work for the kid he stole the phone from, for $5 per hour, until he pays back the full price of the cost of police intervention. Also, if any brat at Paly, Gunn or a local middle school steals from a locker, they should suffer the same fate and be immediately expelled, in a public ceremony of shame.

Unfortunately, it does need to be reported. The high school especially needs to post how many cell phones, ipods ect..... that have been stolen. Parents work hard to buy phones and small items like ipods for their kids.
My childs phone was stolen at Paly by a Varsity football player and given to another child, their friend. When my child reconized the phone and it was traced back to the football player he wanted to fight my child because he was ratted out as a theif.
Yes it needs to be posted because a thief is a thief and they will steal again.

California considers a theft of $400 or more to be grand theft. The replacement cost of a newer iphone is more than $400. Send the punks to jail and let them learn their lesson the hard way.

I agree they should be named. It's very frustrating trying to supervise young people when you aren't able to know what sort of people they are. The content of a person's character should not be kept secret. We would have fewer crimes by young people if they did not have this immunity.
