Man arrested for slashing roommate with a steak knife

Palo Alto police say victim sustained 'moderate injuries' during Thursday fight

A man who used a steak knife to slash his roommate during a fight in the kitchen of their Downtown North residence was arrested Thursday night, police said.

Michael Kenneth Otwell, 64, was booked after he allegedly got involved in an argument with his roommate in their residence on the 400 block of Hawthorne Avenue. The victim sustained moderate injuries and has since been released from a local hospital, police said.

Police said they received a call at 8:34 p.m. on Thursday from a man who said he had just been assaulted with a knife. When officers arrived at the residence, they saw the victim, a man in his 40s, walking out of the house and bleeding from his head. Palo Alto firefighters transported him to a local hospital.

Police said their investigation indicated that the two roommates got into an argument in the kitchen and began fighting. Otwell then allegedly began swinging a steak knife at his roommate, cutting him several times in the head and once in the shoulder. The victim then went into his room and called the police.

Otwell also sustained injuries to his head and face from the fight, police said. He was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail and charged with one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon.
