A man was stabbed in the back outside of Happy Donuts in Palo Alto on Tuesday evening, though neither he nor any witnesses saw the crime occur, according to police.
The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Palo Alto police said. Officers learned about the stabbing after they received a call from someone who reported it at about 7:18 p.m.
The man reportedly had a single stab wound and told police that the stabbing occurred earlier in the evening on Cypress Lane, which runs behind the El Camino businesses in the area.
The man also reportedly told the police that he didn't know who stabbed him, that he never saw the suspect at any point and that he didn't know why someone would stab him.
Police said there were no witnesses to the crime. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the department's 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.

What's the story with Cypress Lane? There have been crime issues there for ages, and I know in the past there was some question of whether it was a public street or not, or even part of Palo Alto (weird I know).

I thought that Cypress Lane was an alley. Calling it a lane doesn't seem to match. When we lived nearby on La Selva this alley wasn't a great place to walk at night.

The local police appear to be busy watching residents for small traffic violations while drug and other violations are going on left and right along that whole strip from Matadero to Los Robles. If these things were happening up past Oregon Expressway they would be eradicated in a matter of weeks.

I live on La Selva but I use Cypress Lane as my main entrance. What I understand is that Cypress Lane is not "county maintained". There was a work day organized by a neighbor several years ago who made a deal with the city- if they graded the road, we would spend a day cleaning up trash. Of course, the potholes (which I have slowly over the years been filling in, making use of the dirt and concrete than often gets dumped there by cheap contractors) quickly reformed after a few good rainstorms.
Though this stretch of dirt road has always been somewhat of an eyesore and thoroughfare for "lurky" individuals, I have never felt unsafe or threatened (I am a large male though). In the past two years though it has gotten worse- there have been occurrences of individuals more or less living back there, lots more trash, and perhaps the worst, human turds everywhere. And now this stabbing- I was home and even out on Cypress Lane around the time it occurred Tues evening, but heard or saw nothing.
