They came to Palo Alto to chant, to cheer, to wave signs, and to experience the rare thrill of seeing their state play a relevant role in a presidential election.
And even after standing for several hours on a synthetic turf at Cubberley Community Center on an unusually hot day, many left the center more energized and thrilled than when they came in. Despite a scorching afternoon, supporters came to "feel the Bern" and to cheer their favored presidential candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders, just days before the crucial Democratic primary on June 7.
Though most polls show his main Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton, enjoying a slight and narrowing lead, Sanders argued in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 supporters that his campaign is most suited to ensuring that a "walking disaster" like the Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump does not win the White House in November.
In a speech that was regularly punctuated by chants of "Bernie!," the veteran Senator from Vermont rattled off the talking points that by now have become well familiar to his supporters in California and across the country: America suffers from a "corrupt" campaign-finance system that undermines democracy; a "rigged economy" where only the rich get richer; and a failed war on drugs that is leading to mass incarceration, particularly of minorities.
He talked about the need to "demilitarize" local police departments, to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, to overturn Citizens United, to promote gender equality and equal pay, to introduce universal health care and tuition-free college education (to be paid for by a tax on Wall Street speculation); to create a path toward citizenship for undocumented immigrants; and to transition America's energy from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like wind, solar and geothermal.
Sporting a yellow Golden State Warriors cap, Sanders also emphasized that his campaign is very much alive and that he offers his party the best shot at defeating Trump in November. Though newspapers like the New York Times have said the "campaign is over," Sanders said, the fact that Hillary and Bill Clinton are both now racing to California to campaign before the primary, suggests that the campaign is far from over.
Sanders used portions of his speech to differentiate himself from Clinton and marveled at the superdelegates who pledged their support to Clinton before any other Democrat was in the race (a decision he called "pretty absurd").
While Clinton has faced criticism for the support she has received from major financial institutions, Sanders stressed the fact that his campaign is funded by millions of individual contributions, the average of them $27.
"Our job is to take on Wall Street, not take their money," Sanders said.
One cause for his campaign's optimism, Sanders said, is the high support he has been receiving from people younger than 45, a demographic that was disproportionately well-represented at the Palo Alto rally.
"Our message in this campaign is of creating a nation and a vision based on social justice economic justice, racial justice, and environmental justice -- that whether Donald Trump likes it or not, whether Hillary Clinton likes it or not, that is the future vision of this country," Sanders said.
But while he made numerous allusions to Clinton, he saved his strongest criticism for Trump, whom he sarcastically mocked as "one of the world's great scientists." If Sanders wins the Democratic nomination, he told the crowd, "Donald Trump is toast."
"No way does Donald Trump become the elected president if we are the campaign to oppose him," Sanders said, pointing to polls showing him leading Trump by a significant margin in a nationwide election (Clinton also leads Trump, though by a slimmer margin. A Wednesday poll from Quinnipiac University shows Clinton defeating Trump by 4 percent and Sanders winning by 9 percent).
This will particularly be true, he said, if the voter turnout is high. If people come out and vote in great numbers, they will not only give the Democrats a lift in the presidential race, they would also allow them to retake Congress and win governorships throughout the country, Sanders said.
"Republicans win national elections when people are demoralized, when they give up on politics and when voter turnout is low," Sanders said. "Progressives and Democrats win elections when people are energized, when they are prepared to stand up and fight and transform America."
There is no objective observer, Sanders said, who can deny that it is "our campaign that has the energy, that has the momentum that will result in high voter turnout in November."
"The only way we transform this country and make our nation become the country we know it can become is when millions of people from coast to coast stand up in a political revolution and believe it creates a government that works for all of us, not just the 1 percent," Sanders said. "That is what this campaign is all about."
Sanders' swing through Palo Alto was part of his busy week in California, a reliably Democratic state with 475 delegates up for grabs. Though he didn't offer any new policies and stayed true to his familiar script, Sanders received a raucous reception from the gathered crowd, with many poster-wielding supporters swarming toward him after the speech to snap a photo or shake his hand.
Many others beamed in excitement made their way off Cubberley's hot turf and proceeded toward the exits. Genevieve Oliveira and Anna Stahlman, who came from San Jose to see Sanders, praised him for his authentic delivery.
"He's very comfortable He just says what he thinks," said Oliveira, 22.
Stahlman, 22, concurred and called Sanders "very relatable."
"It feels like he wants to be your friend," Stahlman said.
Bob Swift, 86, said that win or lose on June 7, Sanders can already claim a victory because he has succeeded in changing the conversation about money in politics. Though Swift said he has heard the talking points before, watching him speak was "incredible."
Jan Tiura, 67, agreed.
"We got our money's worth," Tiura said.

Bernie was elequent. He covered all the basis.
It was a nice event well handled by organizers and police fire supporters.
Many issues Bernie brought up are genuine. Some are tough problems.
I hope Hillary becomes more less-lawyerly and be human. She needs to fess up as to why she was ill advised about the email server. It's not a good enough answer that other state department secretaries did the same.
It takes the president Congress and supreme Court to get major items accomplished. So,I would vote for Hillary and hope she can make him a cabinet secretary if not vp.
American democracy is working great. We have freedom to choose.

Democracy in action; Bernie visits PA for a meet, greet and talk, open to anybody, first come first served. Hillary comes to Palo Alto, not, repeat, not open to the public, will cost you an arm and leg to get into, and then, if you want a picture, you have to pony up more dough. Hillary will forget you all once she has your dough and your vote. Look for message creep soon.

I commend the Palo Alto Police Department, TSA, Bernie's staff and volunteers for coordinating a super organized event. The traffic and people flow went very well. Someone had thought it out really well as far as ease of movement and safety. Medics were there and speedy to respond to the one accident I witnessed, when a lady tripped and fell outside the venue. I am really proud of our civil servants. Thanks for keeping us safe. And the crowd was super polite and nice and fun to be with it. It felt old-timey, hopeful. It was weird. I didn't expect to feel so cheerful and cheered up. An organized, well planned, inspiring event.

While I'm a Hillary supporter, I liked what Bernie had to say and of course everyone wants free University Education and Full Health Care for all and while I think we should expand those on a need basis, saying "Wall Street" can and will pay for it all is BS. Wall Street will just move their offices to London or where ever the best tax haven is and reincorporate over time. Our country and its citizens do best when the economy is going full steam and we need a president who will look after the health of our economy and employers/corporations. Other than more educational spending and not fighting unnecessary wars (both good things) Bernie had nothing to say on strengthening our economy. Also, I'd like to see the next president work to repatriate a lot of the corporate earnings that are being recognized in places like Ireland (e.g. Apple) and also work on improving government efficiency. We need NAFTA and to be competitive globally, not protectionist.
Under Bill Clinton we got a socially progressive leader who also kept the economy going ahead full steam so while I'd love to see Bernie in her administration, I'm voting Hillary.

He, like Hillary has accomplished nothing of meaning as a public servant. All talk, very little action. He is a likable old curmudgeon, but that's about it. His promises of free everything are not feasible. Someone has to pay and the hardest hit will be those in the middle. His popularity is solely based on voters being fed up with the status quo in D.C. Trump's take over of the Republican party is based on the same disgust.

@Go Girl,
I guess you consider espionage, failure to protect, retain and secure top secret information, racketeering, money laundering, and obstruction of justice just tedious rules, rules and more rules to simply be ignored and broken.
The point you are apparently missing is that the Secretary of State holds one of the top three most sensitive positions in our government. The type of information typically on her system would include specific people, methods, means, locations, calendars and capabilities for U.S service members, our allies and operatives.
Even though Hillary received training and signed a NDA acknowledging her responsibilities to protect classified information, she and her staff intentionally removed almost 50,000 files from a secure network and placed them (or copies) on an un-secure and unauthorized private system. She also used un-secure blackberries and iPhones while traveling even though advised explicitly not to use them due to the risk. Further, Hillary and her staff did not turn the files over when she left office and roughly two years later they destroyed about half of them only after she received a subpoena to turn them over.
If that system was breached (and there is growing evidence it was), then people will die and our foreign service and military operations will be set back years of effort directly because of her negligence. Her activities were not bureaucratic rebellion they were very serious crimes and a complete betrayal of our country.

Let us see who is breaking rules. Prove you have nothing classified in your email account. Remember: it need not be marked classified to be classified, and what is unclassified now can get classified at any time.
You need to review your emails against all the classification directives of all US government agencies that have them, and I believe the number is in the hundreds. Some you will not be able to view unless you have very specific accesses, but you are nevertheless prone to having your readings and writings reviewed against them at any time and, if deemed necessary, classified and confiscated. You may be liable to criminal prosecution in some cases, no matter how innocent the message seems to an ordinary reasonable citizen. It's the bureaucracy's rules, and you seem to worship them.
Clinton's emails were unclassified per her own department's rules, but the CIA later classified some of them, applying its own rules which Clinton was very, very unlikely privy to, and probably still is not.
BTW, you do know that Colin Powell and Condi Rice had identical private server email setups, didn't you? Add them to your rogues' list.

@ Go Girl,
You have a long list of inaccuracies so let's go through and correct them one by one:
1. Information is born classified based on its content and classification authority. The guidelines for what should be classified are not complicated and the rule of thumb is to err on the side of caution when in doubt. In fact, the rules for classification were updated by executive order 13526 from President Obama when HRC assumed her position in 2009.
Most certainly, the majority of operational communication to/from the Secretary of State should be classified as they include information outlined in the executive order yet none of hers was secured when transmitted on her system. Below are categories from the exec order for what should be considered classified and many examples were found in the released emails from her server:
(a) military plans, weapons systems, or operations;
(b) foreign government information;
(c) intelligence activities (including covert action), intelligence sources or methods, or cryptology;
(d) foreign relations or foreign activities of the United States, including confidential sources;
(e) scientific, technological, or economic matters relating to the national security;
(f) United States Government programs for safeguarding nuclear materials or facilities;
(g) vulnerabilities or capabilities of systems, installations, infrastructures, projects, plans, or protection services relating to the national security; or
(h) the development, production, or use of weapons of mass destruction.
2. It does not matter whether it is marked or unmarked classified and that is even stated in the NDA HRC signed. The receiver does not get to arbitrarily decide the classification and the sender should assume it. Based on what has been released so far, HRC had over 2,000 classified emails on her non-deleted server including 22 that were Top Secret.
Further, there is a publicly released communication from HRC instructing her staff to literally delete the classification markings and resend the document. She also admitted in her own words that the reason for doing so was specifically to avoid requirements to comply with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
So the claim that they were not classified at the time is ridiculous because all markings were deliberately stripped and removed as they were transposed from the secure network onto her private system. Of course they were not marked classified because her team un-marked them before re-sending them.
3. The recent Inspectors General report confirmed that previous Secretaries of State did not have identical set ups. So your talking point is simply false. HRC's private server and the use of unsecure smart phones were not authorized and would not have been approved if she would have requested it.
Conveniently, the position of inspector general at the Department of State was intentionally not filled during Hillary's tenure and she took the unorthodox step of inserting a political person (Bryan Pagliano) in the IT department in order to cover her email scheme. Not surprisingly, that is the same person who she paid to set up her server in her bathroom. Unbelievably, all of Mr. Pagliano's emails are missing for the entire four year period he worked in the IT organization at the State Department.
All of this information is now public so your characterization that this is somehow red tape is a gross mis-characterization of the events, how classified information should be handled and the active criminal investigation that is on-going.

@ Go Girl - Are you saying that Dr. Condi Rice and Colin Powell ALSO set up a private, unsecured server in their own homes, purchased domains from GoDaddy.com and then used it as their and their staff's primary means of e-correspondence?
I hope that you're not insinuating that they did this -- because it isn't true. Hillary Clinton had full access to those emails (as did hackers like Guccifer) and she had the hard drive storage erased when it became apparent that the FBI was investigating this and requested access to those hard drives.
This isn't apples and oranges. This is like comparing coconuts and cucumbers.

"You have a long list of inaccuracies so let's go through and correct them one by one:"
Yours is much longer so I will just succinctly summarize: There is no broadbrush authority to classify information. You must read, assimilate, and follow the individual security classification guides for each activity, subactivity, etc. Every entry must be traceable to a specific original classification authority. Have fun trying but don't ask too many suspicious questions.

A private email server is a private email server any way you spin it. The only difference is that Clinton is a Democrat while Powell and Rice are Republicans.

Now that the Inspector General has already confirmed HRC and her staff violated government regulations and federal law, let's move on from Go Girl's mis-information campaign. Besides, if Go Girl cannot tell the difference between a server and an e-mail account I doubt that person can be counted on to understand the laws for handling classified material.
A more interesting problem is the Clinton Foundation. Public evidence is mounting for the case connecting quid pro quo payments to the Clinton Foundation and her cronies as well as outside governments. Too many people simultaneously worked for HRC at the state department while continuing activities for her campaign, consulting firm, foundation and private business ventures. If the in formation was laid out showing all the connections between payments, access, influence and paybacks any reasonable person would only conclude that she and her cohorts are guilty of that too.
She deserves that opportunity to present her case to a jury of her peers. So the only remaining question now is what will the AG do when the FBI recommends indictment?
If they are right, the Attorney General MUST indict.
