Palo Alto police have arrested a man who allegedly used a power tool to saw a bicycle lock in an apparent attempt to steal a bike from the downtown Caltrain station on Monday afternoon.

Officers learned about the possible theft when they received a call shortly before 1 p.m.

about a man trying to cut a lock with a power tool in the Caltrain parking lot near the corner of Alma Street and Lytton Avenue, police said in a news release.

When officers arrived, they found the man using a battery-powered circular saw to remove two Kryptonite locks from a Cannondale CAAD12 road bike. According to the bike owner, a man in his 20s, the bike is valued at $1,200, police said. They detained the man without incident and identified him as Angelo James Saunders, 24, of Coulterville.

Police also learned that Saunders had an outstanding warrant out of San Mateo County for possession of burglary tools and possession or narcotics. He was also reportedly on probation from Alameda County for burglary.

In checking his belongings, Palo Alto officers also found that he was in possession of methamphetamine and under the influence of narcotics, police said. He also had someone else's drivers licenses and several burglary tools: circular saw, needle nose pliers and wire cutters. Police located the victim and released the bicycle to him.

Saunders was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail pursuant to the arrest warrant, as well as for attempted grand theft (a felony); possession of narcotics and burglary tools, appropriation of lost property (the driver's license) and for being under the influence of narcotics (all misdemeanors).
