Power outage hits downtown Palo Alto

Utilities crews work through the night to troubleshoot, restore power

Close to 300 customers in and around downtown Palo Alto lost power late Wednesday afternoon -- an incident that was caused by damaged underground cabling, according to Utilities Department.

The power outage was began at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday and affected 274 customers, including City Hall and the Downtown Library.

Shortly before 6 p.m., service was restored to about 90 percent customers, while the downtown library and 700 block of Ramona Street still had no power, Utilities spokeswoman Catherine Elvert said.

Despite the temporary disruption, city's Planning and Transportation Commission meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday continued as scheduled.

Power to the Downtown Library was restored at about 4 a.m. Thursday morning, Elvert said.
