Police: Woman arrested after foothills car chase

Driver allegedly evaded police, punched an officer and hit a dog before getting caught

Palo Alto police have arrested a woman who they said led officers on car chase through the foothills early Wednesday morning and, once stopped, punched an officer and hit the police dog that caught her.

Officers had initially pulled over Tyechia Denise Payton, 34, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, on El Camino Real and Stanford Avenue, at about 1:23 a.m. according to a news release. A patrol officer ran a routine registration check on the vehicle, police said, and discovered that it was associated with an outstanding warrant for assault with a deadly weapon. The warrant was for a female, police said, and the female driver of the Sonata was the vehicle's sole occupant, police said.

The woman, a resident of Thornton, initially complied with the officer's commands but then drove away from the intersection and headed west on Stanford Avenue, toward Junipero Serra Boulevard, according to the police. She then turned west on Page Mill Road and proceeded through the Palo Alto Hills neighborhood. The pursuit ended in the 3200 block of Alexis Drive, where the road dead-ends by Foothills Park, police said.

Police said the woman then exited the car and began punching one of the officers, the news release states. Another officer then deployed a Taser at her, prompting her to run away. After a short foot pursuit, the police dog caught up to her, police said. She struck the animal, though neither the dog nor the officer whom she punched suffered any injuries, police said.

The woman, meanwhile, had minor injuries associated with the getting caught by the dog, police said. She was treated at the scene by Palo Alto Fire Department paramedics and was also taken to a hospital as per standard procedure for TASER application and canine apprehension, police said.

She was also booked for two outstanding warrants out of the Fremont Police Department: the felony warrant associated with her vehicles (assault with a deadly weapon) and a misdemeanor warrant for traffic offenses, police said.

Online county jail records indicate the woman's bail was set at $97,052.

Interesting policy to withhold the name but include a link to it (news release).
One more step on google reveals the classical blacked-out obscene gesture.
Mugshot of the week. Maybe that contibuted to the bail amount.

Let's support our working Dogs. Web Link They can save not only save the life of the police office but often result in the suspect given up without a struggle or a chase.

Thank you very much PAPD for your police work and this arrest - and once again putting yourselves at risk to keep our community safe. Given the outstanding warrant for assault with a deadly weapon, and all the new felony charges, this person is clearly a danger to society. I hope the arresting officer and police dog are OK.

Her name is available thru the Palo Alto Police Department Facebook page. Thinking that she needs some help, very strange behavior.
