Police arrest protester at Lockheed Martin

Man spray paints sign, contacts media, waits for police

Palo Alto police arrested a 34-year-old man after he notified local media that he had just spray painted the word "Yemen" in bright red letters across the sign at Lockheed Martin's Palo Alto headquarters on Saturday afternoon in protest of the aerospace company's sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia.

In an email to the Palo Alto Weekly sent at 3:04 p.m., he wrote: "My name's Bryce Druzin and I just vandalized Lockheed Martin's office at 325 Hanover St., Palo Alto. I did it to protest Lockheed's sales of weapons to Saudi Arabia for their war in Yemen and President Trump's recent veto of bipartisan congressional legislation that would have ended U.S. involvement and weapons sales."

Police arrived at Stanford Research Park before 4 p.m. to arrest Druzin, who was calmly waiting for them.

"You know, it just kind of built up over time. I'm glad I finally did it. I grew up in Palo Alto, and it's embarrassing to have this company in my hometown," Druzin told the Weekly as police were taking him into custody.

He said a particular motivating factor in his decision to protest the company was the Aug 9, 2018, bombing of a school bus in Yemen, when a Saudi plane dropped a bomb produced by Lockheed and killed 40 children.

"If you had a neighbor who was murdering people, you wouldn't want that person here anymore. I don't want Lockheed here anymore. It's a real simple thing for me."

Police are still investigating the case and were unable to comment.

Lockheed Martin declined to comment.

The United States Government is complicit in the genocide in Yemen. Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing are killing CHILDREN with their "products." The individual who did this graffiti is a hero for trying to bring awareness to the employees of Lockheed Martin, who are often fooled into believing that their company behaves ethically.

I have to admit I am ill informed about Lockheed’s dealings as they relate to Yemen. But, that notwithstanding, whatever happened to writing a letter to the editor? Or peacefully picketing? Why be a vandal? And waste the police’s time while you’re at it?

It seems we live in an era where folks are more interested in BEING the story than they are in actually making a difference. I’m willing to bet the vandal tweeted about this after taking a few selfies.

It was unfortunate that the school children were inadvertently killed. That is a terrible tragedy & unfortunately many innocents perish in times of war.

Yemen has been at civil war for some time now and there is no end in sight as various factions are fighting for control of the country.

The United States should consider distancing itself from these conflicts but its only allies in the general area are Saudi Arabia, Jordan & Israel. Everyone else out there hates the US and Yemen is a sanctuary for Al Qaida & the Islamic State.

As a result, the US does what it can to help keep things in check & part of this involves supplying the aforementioned three countries with high-tech armaments.

It's an insurance policy of sorts & a highly profitable industry for the various companies that manufacture weaponry.

While I cannot speak for this protester, I would like to assume that he is an impassioned humanitarian striving to enlighten others rather than some eccentric individual seeking his 15 minutes of fame.

Anyone who derides this as a vain stunt might also wonder why we speak so little about Lockheed Martin's complicity in the murders of Yemeni civilians. Without action like this we would never be talking about the fact that Lockheed and CEO Marillyn Hewson are aware their weapons will be used to massacre people around the world yet sell them willingly.

We Palo Altan’s live in our nice leafy upscale bubble. And we are clueless about the how we are in fact aiding and abetting the loss of life around the world in places like Yemen. By ignoring what Lockheed is doing in our own backyard we are complicit in their doings.

This guy could have organized a protest instead. So I don’t agree with the approached he used. But I am glad he is calling attention to this issue.

We elected those people on both sides who vote for the budgets and strategies that make our foreign policy. How completely naive of the terrorist who attacked this company and those who applaud him. Nobody likes pollution either but we all want warm homes and our SUVs so attacking oil companies for providing the fuels our entire lifestyles depend on is naive. So too with a defense industry, we need it because the world is a dangerous place and it better be the best on on the block if we need to use it. If the products are misused, people have a right to complain and to elect representatives that better represent their views.
It’s always interesting to watch live sessions of congress and realize how poorly informed the members are. Those in tech or finance probably appreciate that our representatives are not as informed as they should be. Yet, we keep electing them. We keep electing decision makers who make bad decisions, or as now, in congress no decisions about serious policies and assume that they will be providing good oversight.
Spray painting a sign is nothing even close to responsible adult behavior and not too different from more violent acts against groups or symbols or buildings that people like this guy attack. Same act, cowardly attack out of sight and boasting. Hopefully, this guy doesn’t get near more lethal tools. In the meantime, throw him in jail and make him clean up his mess. Extremists aren’t better people because they live in Palo Alto and think their personal cause is worthy. That’s the same excuse too many simple minds have used to attack our fragile civility.

Vandalizing and demonizing Lockheed Martin is wrong. Hopefully this misguided and wreckless vandal will be forced to cleanup his mess and fined. Simple uneducated minds wrongly oversimplify history and the harsh reality of the world. A strong national defense is the best way to preserve peace. Do tragedies happen in the world? Yes, every day tragedies and accidents happen. Are international relations, diplomacy, national security and armament sales multi-faceted and complex issues? Yes! Painting Lockheed Martin as some evil group is such a wrong oversimplification and use of the broad paintbrush so often used by radical left wing zealots. If you disagree with US foreign policy you can vote for your unrealistic naive candidates, the same people who will certainly make the USA weaker and vulnerable. Peace through strength!

Col. Lankford, you do realize that our "ally" Saudi Arabia, is responsible for the proliferation of Al Qaida, ISIS and related ideological groups across the globe? The bombing of a school bus may be inadvertent during times of war, but the war in Yemen is due to Saudi Arabia's policies in the middle east.

And Pilots for America: You're ignorance is showing. The Saudi's support the Yemeni government. Furthermore if the "terrorists" surrender to the Saudi government they could be met with any number of medieval punishments (like beheading). I'm a military jet pilot and I even I think Lockheed is evil trash. The US needs to completely divest in the company and give Iran a nuclear bomb for free. It's the fastest way to peace in the conflict.

What's wrong with that...in certain instances?

If ISIS, Al Qaeda and/or IS prisoners met that fate, very few in America would grieve. What comes around, goes around.

^^^ YES! There are no 'good guys' in that region & the United States should not sell weaponry to them or sacrifice one further drop of American blood defending or assisting these countries.

Oil dependency is the only reason for a vested interest in the region & if America + the rest of the 'civilized' world can gradually shift to EVs, then these countries will have nothing to sell & they too can become more environmental...as in going back to camels as a primary means of transportation.

"A strong national defense is the best way to preserve peace."

A strong national defense, applied wisely, is the best way to preserve peace. Most of the current turmoil in the Middle East began in the egregious misuse of our national defense forces to launch the needless, thoroughly bungled Cheney-Bush invasion of Iraq.

"How was the strong national defense in Iraq?"

Egregiously misapplied. As we now know (and many of us knew at the time), there was nothing to defend against. The "threat" was invented by the Cheney-Bush administration as a pretext to seize the Iraqi oil production, which it also bungled.

I took it as a comment/mockery on the wisdom of being in Iraq, ie we all know Iraq was a complete disaster, courtesy of Bush/Cheney and a compliant (mostly GOP) congress.

I totally support Bryce Druzin and his actions towards Lockheed Martin! He did the right thing in calling out Lockheed for their role in supporting the Saudi war in Yemen. The only mistake he made was in allowing himself to be arrested and having to face consequences for his actions. To those who suggested that Bryce should delete the graffiti with a toothbrush, i have an alternative suggestion. We should find a way to get Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS) and Donald Trump to do the toothbrush work. MBS should face serious consequences for his murder of the children in Yemen as well as his murder of the Saudi journalist in Turkey. Donald Trump should equally face consequences for supporting the Saudi regime and its murderous policies and for vetoing the bill approved by both houses of Congress to end US involvement in the war in Yemen. The reality is that neither MBS nor Trump will face the consequences they deserve. Bryce deserves nothing but our support for having the guts to take a stand against Lockheed!

It was a vandalistic deed and a way of expressing himself and venting steam...that will go nowhere to change anything. Lockheed and the rest of the industrial complex need a good war event every couple years so they can sell us a couple hundred new cruise missiles as we light them off.

Been almost two years since we decorated a useless Syrian airfield. Got to find something new to blow up soon.

Meanwhile, sell more bombs to the Saudis.

> The only mistake he made was in allowing himself to be arrested and having to face consequences for his actions.

Yes. He could have left the scene after making his spray-painted statement & allowed the media and/or police figure out who did it.

Instead he called the PA Weekly to announce his deed & waited 45 minutes for the PAPD to arrive & arrest him.

This all sounds a bit narcissistic & attention-grabbing to me.

This guy is not a statement hero or zealous advocate...just another eight-ball seeking attention and as a previous poster noted, perhaps his 15 minutes of fame.

Whack-job or advocate...you make the call.

The 1st Amendment 'freedom of speech' statute does not apply to the vandalism of private property.

Why didn't he simply spray paint his (or his parent's) front lawn and then draw media attention to it?

Simple answer...because he wouldn't get as much ATTENTION.

How sad...to be so lonely & disenfranchised with an issue that no one has no any control over.

The Saudis are going to continue leveling Yemen outposts regardless of whether the bombs say 'Made in the USA' or 'Made in China'.

The Arab & Middle Eastern world are regions filled with anger and retribution. It is a major part of their cultural perspectives (i.e. Sunni vs Shite, Sunni & Shite vs America & Israel, Israel vs Palestine, Iran vs Iraq et al). And we won't even get into the more backwards countries in Africa.

When you encounter a hornet's nest, common sense dictates not to stir it up. The same should be said for US involvement in this area.

Let these countries destroy each other if that is their quest. Why make it an American problem or issue to contend with?

Ignorance, disease and war is all they seem to know or acknowledge.

Whatever you think about Bryce Druzin's action, you must acknowledge that in one way at least he accomplished what I believe was his most important goal: how many people in Palo Alto thought about Yemen today who had not considered it, or U.S. complicity in what's happening there, in a long time, if ever. He could hardly have done this by spray painting his lawn. And if you're not sure about the horrific tragedy that is in part the result of that complicity, I urge you to seek out Nicholas Kristof's recent reports from there in the NY Times.

There is NO possible excuse for damaging someone else’s property because you want to express yourself. His actions are nothing more than vandalism which normal people should find unacceptable. It’s sad to see so many supporting this guy. It’s pretty much the same craziness as those who dress up in ninja suits to commit violence while protesting against hate. This 34 year old thinks spray painting Yemen on someone’s property is a good idea. What’s next. It’s troubling because this must be very similar to the flawed reasoning others use to do far worse, like lighting churches on fire. Hopefully, he doesn’t own any weapons. Hopefully, more people won’t praise him for his actions.

Hi George,

I am not the caricature you and others imagine. If we met in person, we could have a civil conversation. I am not a “crazy ninja”. I’m a reasonable and friendly guy from Palo Alto who works 9-5 in an office.

I protested in a way that avoided any chance of someone being hurt, and I will foot the bill for the property cleanup.

Please consider that comparing my actions to violence against people and destroying houses of worship is deeply offensive to the victims of actual violence. Churches, mosques and synagogues have been attacked. A man drove into a group of people in Sunnyvale because he thought they were Muslims. People have died and their families will never get to be with them again. That is violence. I did an act of non-violent civil disobedience.

If you have any thoughts on what I wrote I am a happy to continue this dialogue.

Best,
Bryce Druzin

I was quite active in NYC and DC in the 70’s anti-war movement and appreciate the value of non-violent protest. Non-violent protest doesn’t include willful destruction of other people’s property. If you look into the lives and thoughts of those most remembered for their contributions to non-violent protest you won’t find spray painting someone’s property in the middle of the night anywhere in the literature. That is more an act of emotion than reason, not in any way heroic, and an act against the entire community, not just one company.

Amazing comments here? LM is building the satellites that allow you to use your phone and GPS positioning. LM builds products, the military then uses the products where they think are needed based on government agreements with the countries that are requesting help in stabilizing their countries. Hard to do when you have multiple tribes each with their own agenda. Many of those countries are not open to any internal government coordination. And many of the tribes within use their women and children as shields. Problems and disagreements in that location have gone on since biblical times. The PA location is focused on engineering and working with other agencies to increase the technology relative to satellite ability to direct traffic overhead and climate forecasting. Obviously the technology increases are over Bryce's head. He is making a comparison with crazies who use bombs made of nails.

Tribes? Bombs made of nails? Weather satellites?

Nice deflection from LM's support of Saudi's (veritable tribal saints, of course) atrocities in Yemen.

There's a few tribes one can think of on this continent that have valid complaints. How about 'bombs' made of small pox infected blankets?

See how easily deflection works? Much props though, for not including fruit companies in the last post.

Glad you mentioned the fruit companies - my comment on that got deleted. The fruit companies who are functioning in Central America have their corporate offices in California. This is the state where your investors are - and board of directors.
So the state and federal government is profiting from the activities in those locations. Crops are zone specific. This zone is your wineries in Napa, Sonoma, all over California and the hills above. Same companies are working in Hawaii but Hawaii is a state so federal government is profiting.
Note that UFCO is a Harvard Business School test case. Check it out on Wikipedia. A lot of business schools use it as a test case since the corporate office was in Boston and your major ports had UFCO dedicated wharfs.

Do people who opine about the subject even know about the country of Yemen, and Shiites (Iranians) and Sunnis (Saudis). Before blaming Lockheed, they have to start learning about the origin of the conflict and roles of countries like Iran and of course Saudis. The conflict has its roots in two views of Islam. It is ridiculous that people are dying and starving because of a series of desert politics 1400 years ago. Ideally, a religious branching like this should be an opportunity to create perhaps a progressive wing vs. a, say, conservative wing. But unfortunately both branches of Islam are very conservative. And the fight is merely about the personalities rather than actual policies.

Well, successfully made it into print in one local daily, a one-liner in the police blotter between a women's sportswear theft and a lost license plate.

Hi @Green Acres,

The people who say we need to support Saudi Arabia to counter Iranian influence in Yemen are the same people who pushed us to invade Iraq, which hugely increased Iranian influence in the region.

If a doctor botched a surgery as bad as the hawks botched Iraq, that doctor would be banned from medicine and his opinions would be laughed out of the room. The people urging us to stay involved in Yemen have zero credibility. They had their chance with Iraq, and they demonstrated they don’t what they’re talking about.

Best,
Bryce Druzin

God Bless Trump for not funding both sides of endless wars like the war mongering Neo Cons and Democrats. The white hats in the military industrial complex are siding with America and Trump. [Portion removed.]

"The white hats in the military industrial complex are siding with America and Trump."

All evidence to the contrary, of course:
- the military industrial complex is interested in PROFIT, first and foremost. By their own words.
- Trump wants to SPEND SPEND SPEND on the military industrial complex - see DOD budgets for facts

"bankrupt America"

Trump took Obama's deficit (reduced from bush's trillion dollar deficit down to less than half) and is now doubling it.

From Forbes, the heart of conservative capitalism:

"The first thing you notice when looking at the federal deficits from fiscal 2007 (the U.S. government fiscal year ends in September) is that it increased by almost $1 trillion from fiscal 2008 (two months before Obama was elected and four months before he was sworn in) to fiscal 2009. It remained over $1 trillion per year for four years and got below Bush’s.... It continued to decrease until Obama’s last year and has increased in Trump’s first year in office."

Fiscal 2007: $161 billion (next to last year of Bush’s second term)
Fiscal 2008: $459 billion (beginning impact from the Great Recession)
Fiscal 2009: $1.4 trillion (Obama inherits Bush's Great Recession trillions)
Fiscal 2010: $1.3 trillion
Fiscal 2011: $1.3 trillion
Fiscal 2012: $1.1 trillion
Fiscal 2013: $680 billion
Fiscal 2014: $485 billion
Fiscal 2015: $438 billion
Fiscal 2016: $587 billion
Fiscal 2017: $666 billion (Trump’s first year of his Presidency)

2018 - over $700B
2019 will be back over a trillion (see Bush disaster)

Bryce - politics aside what is your age, educational level of completion, and if you work where? How long have you lived in this area? Any ideas you come up needs to be qualified against your educational level. And what is your specific interest in Yemen? Family? Friends? Are you working with anyone else on this blog who is providing instruction on responses?

Wow - great questions!

"what is your age, educational level of completion, and if you work where? How long have you lived in this area? Any ideas you come up needs to be qualified against your educational level. And what is your specific interest in Yemen? Family? Friends?"

I hope Mr. Druzin is wise enough to reply: "you first, anonymous poster, starting with full name..."

"God Bless Trump for not funding both sides of endless wars like the war mongering Neo Cons and Democrats. The white hats in the military industrial complex are siding with America and Trump. They are battling the deep state shadow government that wanted to bankrupt America with endless wars, endless refugees and endless illegal aliens so we'd have no choice but to go under world government control. I thank God everyday for Trump. He is the peace on Earth President! The Democrat party war hawks wanted WW3 with Russia."

Thats exactly right. The deep state wants to take away all our guns so they can take over and give the USA to the bildaburgs and the climate changers and all those other world goverments. Donald Trump wont let them do it. He alone can stop them. And he will youll see. God bless Donald Trump.

"The deep state wants to take away all our guns so they can take over"

Has that ever happened? When the Dems had complete control? When the GOP had complete control? No. It's a fantasy fear that keeps the low IQ base in line.

"and give the USA to the bildaburgs"

Wonder what Jared Kushner thinks of this kind of talk. You're really close to "those international bankers" talk...

"Donald Trump wont let them do it. He alone can stop them"

Web Link "Top Trump Officials Attend Globalist Bilderberg Summit. Why?"

Why? To grift more money, of course. "He alone can stop them" C'mon - we all know he'll throw you and the country overboard instantly if he can save his skin and make a buck along with it. Not even counting his getting another porn actress.

Absolutely fantastic post! Thank you. It really really sums everything up quite well. Again - thanks!
