Palo Alto police arrested a 34-year-old man after he notified local media that he had just spray painted the word "Yemen" in bright red letters across the sign at Lockheed Martin's Palo Alto headquarters on Saturday afternoon in protest of the aerospace company's sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia.
In an email to the Palo Alto Weekly sent at 3:04 p.m., he wrote: "My name's Bryce Druzin and I just vandalized Lockheed Martin's office at 325 Hanover St., Palo Alto. I did it to protest Lockheed's sales of weapons to Saudi Arabia for their war in Yemen and President Trump's recent veto of bipartisan congressional legislation that would have ended U.S. involvement and weapons sales."
Police arrived at Stanford Research Park before 4 p.m. to arrest Druzin, who was calmly waiting for them.
"You know, it just kind of built up over time. I'm glad I finally did it. I grew up in Palo Alto, and it's embarrassing to have this company in my hometown," Druzin told the Weekly as police were taking him into custody.
He said a particular motivating factor in his decision to protest the company was the Aug 9, 2018, bombing of a school bus in Yemen, when a Saudi plane dropped a bomb produced by Lockheed and killed 40 children.
"This is my hometown where I grew up, and (Lockheed) is our neighbor that lives in the community and is helping murder people," Druzin continued. "If you had a neighbor who was murdering people, you wouldn't want that person here anymore. I don't want Lockheed here anymore. It's a real simple thing for me."
Police are still investigating the case and were unable to comment.
Lockheed Martin declined to comment.

I have to admit I am ill informed about Lockheed’s dealings as they relate to Yemen. But, that notwithstanding, whatever happened to writing a letter to the editor? Or peacefully picketing? Why be a vandal? And waste the police’s time while you’re at it?
It seems we live in an era where folks are more interested in BEING the story than they are in actually making a difference. I’m willing to bet the vandal tweeted about this after taking a few selfies.

It was unfortunate that the school children were inadvertently killed. That is a terrible tragedy & unfortunately many innocents perish in times of war.
Yemen has been at civil war for some time now and there is no end in sight as various factions are fighting for control of the country.
The United States should consider distancing itself from these conflicts but its only allies in the general area are Saudi Arabia, Jordan & Israel. Everyone else out there hates the US and Yemen is a sanctuary for Al Qaida & the Islamic State.
As a result, the US does what it can to help keep things in check & part of this involves supplying the aforementioned three countries with high-tech armaments.
It's an insurance policy of sorts & a highly profitable industry for the various companies that manufacture weaponry.
While I cannot speak for this protester, I would like to assume that he is an impassioned humanitarian striving to enlighten others rather than some eccentric individual seeking his 15 minutes of fame.

Anyone who derides this as a vain stunt might also wonder why we speak so little about Lockheed Martin's complicity in the murders of Yemeni civilians. This guy could have organized a protest instead. So I don’t agree with the approached he used. But I am glad he is calling attention to this issue.

We elected those people on both sides who vote for the budgets and strategies that make our foreign policy. How completely naive of the terrorist who attacked this company and those who applaud him. Nobody likes pollution either but we all want warm homes and our SUVs so attacking oil companies for providing the fuels our entire lifestyles depend on is naive. So too with a defense industry, we need it because the world is a dangerous place and it better be the best on on the block if we need to use it. If the products are misused, people have a right to complain and to elect representatives that better represent their views.
It’s always interesting to watch live sessions of congress and realize how poorly informed the members are. Those in tech or finance probably appreciate that our representatives are not as informed as they should be. Yet, we keep electing them. We keep electing decision makers who make bad decisions, or as now, in congress no decisions about serious policies and assume that they will be providing good oversight.
Spray painting a sign is nothing even close to responsible adult behavior and not too different from more violent acts against groups or symbols or buildings that people like this guy attack. Same act, cowardly attack out of sight and boasting. Hopefully, this guy doesn’t get near more lethal tools. In the meantime, throw him in jail and make him clean up his mess. Extremists aren’t better people because they live in Palo Alto and think their personal cause is worthy. That’s the same excuse too many simple minds have used to attack our fragile civility.

@Mark - I don’t know how people who work for facebook or google or any of the many silicon valley companies who are building Big Brother spying tools, violent and demeaning gaming, tools for manipulating public opinion, apps that are dumbing down our young, etc. sleep at night. On balance the products flowing unrestrained from Silicon Valley on the eve of artificial intelligence is really scary. I don’t know how those people sleep at night.

^^^ YES! There are no 'good guys' in that region & the United States should not sell weaponry to them or sacrifice one further drop of American blood defending or assisting these countries.
Oil dependency is the only reason for a vested interest in the region & if America + the rest of the 'civilized' world can gradually shift to EVs, then these countries will have nothing to sell & they too can become more environmental...as in going back to camels as a primary means of transportation.

I totally support Bryce Druzin and his actions towards Lockheed Martin! He did the right thing in calling out Lockheed for their role in supporting the Saudi war in Yemen. The only mistake he made was in allowing himself to be arrested and having to face consequences for his actions. To those who suggested that Bryce should delete the graffiti with a toothbrush, i have an alternative suggestion. We should find a way to get Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS) and Donald Trump to do the toothbrush work. MBS should face serious consequences for his murder of the children in Yemen as well as his murder of the Saudi journalist in Turkey. Donald Trump should equally face consequences for supporting the Saudi regime and its murderous policies and for vetoing the bill approved by both houses of Congress to end US involvement in the war in Yemen. The reality is that neither MBS nor Trump will face the consequences they deserve. Bryce deserves nothing but our support for having the guts to take a stand against Lockheed!

Yes. He could have left the scene after making his spray-painted statement & allowed the media and/or police figure out who did it.
Instead he called the PA Weekly to announce his deed & waited 45 minutes for the PAPD to arrive & arrest him.

Whatever you think about Bryce Druzin's action, you must acknowledge that in one way at least he accomplished what I believe was his most important goal: how many people in Palo Alto thought about Yemen today who had not considered it, or U.S. complicity in what's happening there, in a long time, if ever. He could hardly have done this by spray painting his lawn. And if you're not sure about the horrific tragedy that is in part the result of that complicity, I urge you to seek out Nicholas Kristof's recent reports from there in the NY Times.

There is NO possible excuse for damaging someone else’s property because you want to express yourself. His actions are nothing more than vandalism which normal people should find unacceptable. It’s sad to see so many supporting this guy. It’s pretty much the same craziness as those who dress up in ninja suits to commit violence while protesting against hate. This 34 year old thinks spray painting Yemen on someone’s property is a good idea. What’s next. It’s troubling because this must be very similar to the flawed reasoning others use to do far worse, like lighting churches on fire. Hopefully, he doesn’t own any weapons. I am not the caricature you and others imagine. If we met in person, we could have a civil conversation. I am not a “crazy ninja”. I’m a reasonable and friendly guy from Palo Alto who works 9-5 in an office.
I protested in a way that avoided any chance of someone being hurt, and I will foot the bill for the property cleanup.
Please consider that comparing my actions to violence against people and destroying houses of worship is deeply offensive to the victims of actual violence. Churches, mosques and synagogues have been attacked. A man drove into a group of people in Sunnyvale because he thought they were Muslims. People have died and their families will never get to be with them again. That is violence. I did an act of non-violent civil disobedience.
If you have any thoughts on what I wrote I am a happy to continue this dialogue.

I was quite active in NYC and DC in the 70’s anti-war movement and appreciate the value of non-violent protest. Non-violent protest doesn’t include willful destruction of other people’s property. If you look into the lives and thoughts of those most remembered for their contributions to non-violent protest you won’t find spray painting someone’s property in the middle of the night anywhere in the literature. That is more an act of emotion than reason, not in any way heroic, and an act against the entire community, not just one company.

Amazing comments here? LM is building the satellites that allow you to use your phone and GPS positioning. LM builds products, the military then uses the products where they think are needed based on government agreements with the countries that are requesting help in stabilizing their countries. Hard to do when you have multiple tribes each with their own agenda. Many of those countries are not open to any internal government coordination. And many of the tribes within use their women and children as shields. Problems and disagreements in that location have gone on since biblical times. The PA location is focused on engineering and working with other agencies to increase the technology relative to satellite ability to direct traffic overhead and climate forecasting. Obviously the technology increases are over Bryce's head. He is making a comparison with crazies who use bombs made of nails.

Glad you mentioned the fruit companies - my comment on that got deleted. The fruit companies who are functioning in Central America have their corporate offices in California. This is the state where your investors are - and board of directors.
So the state and federal government is profiting from the activities in those locations. Crops are zone specific. This zone is your wineries in Napa, Sonoma, all over California and the hills above. Same companies are working in Hawaii but Hawaii is a state so federal government is profiting.
Note that UFCO is a Harvard Business School test case. Check it out on Wikipedia. A lot of business schools use it as a test case since the corporate office was in Boston and your major ports had UFCO dedicated wharfs.

Do people who opine about the subject even know about the country of Yemen, and Shiites (Iranians) and Sunnis (Saudis). Before blaming Lockheed, they have to start learning about the origin of the conflict and roles of countries like Iran and of course Saudis. The conflict has its roots in two views of Islam. It is ridiculous that people are dying and starving because of a series of desert politics 1400 years ago. Ideally, a religious branching like this should be an opportunity to create perhaps a progressive wing vs. a, say, conservative wing. But unfortunately both branches of Islam are very conservative. And the fight is merely about the personalities rather than actual policies.

The people who say we need to support Saudi Arabia to counter Iranian influence in Yemen are the same people who pushed us to invade Iraq, which hugely increased Iranian influence in the region.
If a doctor botched a surgery as bad as the hawks botched Iraq, that doctor would be banned from medicine and his opinions would be laughed out of the room. The people urging us to stay involved in Yemen have zero credibility. They had their chance with Iraq, and they demonstrated they don’t what they’re talking about.

Any ideas you come up needs to be qualified against your educational level. And what is your specific interest in Yemen? Family? Friends?
