Retirements and job changes are expected to bring new leaders to two Palo Alto schools this fall, with an interim principal taking over permanently at a third campus.

In a March 22 press release, the Palo Alto Unified School District announced the leadership transitions, which the school board is set to vote on at its meeting this Tuesday, March 28.

Palo Alto Adult School Principal Tom Keating is set to retire at the end of the school year and current Hoover Elementary School Principal Jim Sherman will take over the top post at the adult school. Sherman has been at Hoover for the past five years, according to the release.

Current Greendell School Principal Nikole Manou will take over as Hoover's principal, while also continuing to lead Greendell. Hoover will temporarily share Greendell's campus (which sits next to Cubberley Community Center) starting next fall as Hoover's permanent campus undergoes construction. Hoover is expected to stay at the temporary site at Greendell for at least two years, district spokesperson George Pinckney said in an email. Greendell operates multiple early childhood education programs, including Preschool Family, Special Education Preschool and Young Fives.

According to Pinckney, the district decided to have Hoover and Greendell share a principal because Greendell is "significantly smaller" than it has been in the past. Transitional kindergarten classes are now housed on sites throughout the district, rather than being centralized at Greendell, Pinckney said.

The district hasn't decided how long the shared principal model will last, Pinckney said.

"Time will tell if the assignment is sustainable," Pinckney said in an email. "We expect it to be manageable, especially since the new Hoover principal was already on-site and thinks this is completely doable."

The planned leadership changes also include current El Carmelo Elementary School interim Principal Leonel Argumedo taking over the permanent post at the school. Shannon Coleman, El Carmelo's former principal, has been on medical leave. When she returns, she will move to a "principal on special assignment" post at the district office.

Also at the district office, Director of Academic Initiatives Kathleen Laurence plans to retire. The district currently doesn't plan to fill the position, Pinckney said.
