Palo Alto resident discovers burglary in progress, causes suspects to flee

Intruders haven't been identified, are still at large

A Palo Alto resident interrupted a burglary in progress on Tuesday night, May 2, when her home security system alerted her that two people had entered her unlocked side yard gate in the University South neighborhood, police said.

The woman told police that she was alone in her home in the 1400 block of Byron Street, about a block away from Middlefield Road, when her security cameras tipped her off to the intruder. She immediately dialed 911 at 9:12 p.m. and simultaneously yelled out "hello" to the suspects, causing them to flee, according to a press release from the Palo Alto Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the rear sliding glass door was shattered. The woman reported that nothing was missing.

As of Wednesday, police haven't apprehended the reported intruders. They appeared to wear sweatshirts, masks that fully obscured their faces and gloves, police said. Surveillance cameras in the neighborhood showed a four-door sedan, possibly a Dodge Charger, fleeing the scene at the time of the burglary, police added.

Investigators are looking into whether Tuesday night's attempted burglary is connected to a similar incident that occurred on April 21. In that case, a resident in the 1500 block of Dana Avenue reported that someone broke the glass of his rear door while he was at home. When the resident ran downstairs to see what was going on, he heard the sound of someone running away and then a car driving off.

There was also a residential burglary of an unoccupied home reported Wednesday morning, May 3, that occurred the prior night at 8:52 p.m. in the first block of Jordan Place. Preliminary information suggests two people broke in using a window in the rear yard, police said. It isn't known whether anything was taken, police added, and they are investigating whether the case is connected to the other two.

I am profoundly troubled by the ongoing series of burglaries in our community. The police department's failure to capture the perpetrators in this instance underscores a more extensive problem – our law enforcement is understaffed as a result of persistent funding shortages. This predicament endangers our citizens and impacts our community's overall quality of life. It is crucial that we provide our police force with the necessary resources to safeguard and serve the public. Encouragingly, the latest city budget appears to be prioritizing this issue. With hope, we will soon witness positive changes.

I agree with the above post completely.

I would go further and say that this is happening too often in California. It is time for the State to be tough on crime and tough on criminals.

I miss the like button.

It’s state of California’s current soft on crime policies and (many) CA county district attorneys’ soft on charging and prosecution choices that put us in this era of confident criminals enjoying themselves.

I think public safety is job #1 of our elected and appointed public officials.

Even in Palo Alto, do recall some screeched to “defund the police,” a way to look cool.
Well, of course, police officials who violate the law must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, but protesting/reducing budgets/ discouraging qualified persons from serving as police officers, criticizing commonsense law enforcement is NOT the way to go.
Look where we are now.

And please, let’s not let it get to be as unsafe and lawless as Oakland and SF’s situation!
