Opinion: Palo Alto should have an LGBT+ pride celebration

Original post made on Nov 13, 2023

In Palo Alto we have a significant population of LGBT+ youth but no local pride celebration. Having a local pride parade or pride festival would be a fantastic way to bring the Palo Alto community together.

Sorry, no thank you.

I used to participate in the San Francisco pride parade but decided to no longer walk in the parade. This subject has evolved so far to the point where the politicians are passing rules that will permanently hurt parents, children and young people.

I totally agree. I traveled all over the area this past year with Free Mom Hugs (who are people of all ages and genders giving hugs and support at Pride events), and I did wonder why Palo Alto doesn't have a Pride event. Let's make one! :)

Katie - if it's so important to you, then why don't you organize it?

Fine. Pay for it yourself. My taxes are enough already.

Of course Palo Alto should have a Pride Parade. It’s the right thing to do. Part of the reason we moved here in 1989 was due to the wonderful community of Palo Alto. It’s simple. Do the right thing.

For a town that can't even have a 4th July parade that is for everyone, I don't know why we should consider this or Lunar New Year Parade, or Christmas (sorry Holiday) Parade, or any other smaller parade. Let's try and do 4th July and be inclusive for every group.

It's sad that Palo Alto can't even put together a 4th July parade like most cities, but budget constraints come to mind.

I'm disappointed by the comments on this thread. [Portion removed.] How about a little kindness and inclusion? Or at least those of you who are willing to be cruel, please have the guts to sign your name.

Cities typically have parades for the economic drivers of the city. Garlic in Gilroy. The economic driver in PA is the events at PAHS, Gunn HS and SU which bring in both the sports and music events which benefit the whole city. People go to that which is of interest. We have the Chili Cookoff, Art and Wine event on University in the spring.

There is a huge Pride Parade in SF which people come from all locations to attend. That is an economic driver for SF. My opinion is that satisfies the bay area Pride event. The Pride event covers more than one classification of sexual orientation.

We have a budgetary amount assigned to festivities and parades now that covers all of the bases. Those events do not assign sexual exclusion. It is some irritation that some groups are looking for taxpayer supported recognition of their specific interests that excludes many of the tax-paying residents. Not the cities job.
