I have a cousin, a flgiht attendant, who was devestated by this event. She lost close friends.

God bless the crew and passengers who fought back, and God damn the fools who in the aftermath were still counseling restraint.

That effort to rename one of San Francisco's sewage treatment plants after President Bush qualified for the ballot yesterday.
We can all agree that it's sophomoric and all that, but have the arrogant creeps behind this effort thought about how this kind of thing just reinforces the public impression that the cultural left drips with contempt for the common man?

Do you think the people working at the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant think their lives are a joke?

Their work is essential to the very existence of urban industrial society and these leftist nuts mock them? It's disgusting, but this contempt for the hoi polloi is the reason Republicans keep winning presidential elections.

If the Bush administration were smart, they'd have lept at this opportunity, saying that while the president deplored the disdain for working people inherent in such an effort, he would be proud to have his name associated with such a vital service and stood in solidarity with the engineers and chemists and electricians and others that help make modern life possible against the scorn of the lunatic left.

While I don't agree with your last paragraph, I do agree with the rest of what you say. The idea of making a joke is one thing, but instead it will backfire. Firstly as you say, it makes a mockery of the people who work at the plant and the necessary work they do for people who like us need our sewage treated efficiently. Secondly, this is one of those items that makes a mockery of the US from the point of view of the rest of the world. When the rest of the world laughs, they remember the joke not the reason. They laugh at the Clinton/Monica affair without remembering the details and they will laugh at the San Francisco electorate for attempting this without remembering whether there was success or not.

For once, wouldn't it be a good idea to do something worthwhile rather than deciding to name anything after anyone. I would much rather the efforts be put towards improving education, fighting crime, helping innercity children find their ways out of joining gangs, anything useful rather than this.

And, on the subject of the memorial which started this. I think that memorials are a good idea. I would much rather have a permanent place memorialising an event or person, where those who want to remember can visit, rather than naming a place after the event or establishing a national holiday in its honor. In the same way that we like to visit the graveside of a loved one, a memorial is the best idea.

There you go again, Gary--we have already established who the real hatriots are--people like you and the people you worship (Rove, Bush, Rice, rumsfeld, cheney etc) who have contempt for what our country stands for and the reputation we have built up over the years.

Blue-collar workers in SF are a pretty liberal bunch with good senses of humor. You really think they'd hang around SF if they weren't? (SF is also where your UPS guy as well as your interior designer is gay. And where my self-proclaimed conservative sister-in-law voted for Gavin Newsom as the more conservative of her choices.)

I mean, we're talking about San Francisco--I don't think there's been a time when the city didn't go its own way and do its own thing. Glad to see that after the dot-com boom and the grimness of the last seven years that SF retains a bit of its old quirky character. That it's still Baghdad-by-the-Bay even if Baghdad's no longer Baghdad.

It takes a really defective/selective memory to blame Bush for starting the Iraq war. And I fully concur with jr about the frisco treatment plant. Who was it that said a nation that exalted the philosopher because philosophy was a noble calling but demeaned the plumber because plumbing was a base calling is in trouble because neither its ideas nor its pipes will hold water?

Back to topic: I am grateful that Texas community exists. GREAT for them. They are the type of people I am proud to call my American siblings. NYC, still just has a hole in the ground. 7 years later. Yet right next door is a brand new, inhabited, 52 story ( I think) building, since there were no well meaning "public" sectors involved.

Just one minor correction, YforT; it is frisco, not a saint and not capitalized. As for Texas, it is a pity they don't know how to cook down there.

I just read the morning SF Comical: I had forgotten about their insane "sanctuary" policy, ..which has resulted in yet more murders by illegals.
