Garbage pile at M-A is 'shock factor' on waste

Schools should be doing a lot more to reduce, reuse and recycle apart from teaching this concept.

At a recent science fair, every child participating was given a display board. These boards were treated by the students as single use boards. There was no collection the following week for these boards so that they could be reused in the future.

At the recent Earth Day celebrations, all the signs I saw were made with new (not previously used) paper. These signs may have been recycled, but if they had been made on "gray" paper, the lesson may have hit home more practically.

Many of the blue recycling bins at the schools get filled long before trash pickup day. Either the schools have to get more, or else the recyclables will be put in the trash.

The teachers themselves must make more use in the classroom of the one sided papers they generate. These can be used for scratch, spelling tests, jotters, etc. Even in my own schooldays, many eons ago, we stapled old papers together to make jotters!

The practical lesson here is a good idea, but the schools should practice the lesson rather than just teach it.

The students seem to be working very hard to raise awareness to better our community and earth. Congrats to them!
