Burns confirmed unanimously as police chief

Original post made on Sep 22, 2009

Dennis Burns officially took over the top job in the Palo Alto Police Department Monday night after an enthusiastic City Council approved him to be the city's new police chief. He received a standing ovation from the council and audience, which included a group of police officers. ==B Related story:==

Congrats Chief Burns!! This is a very popular appointment you only had to read the blogs to see that. Infact there was a very small minority who opposed the appointment, probably fewer than six people, but they made a lot of noise.

Burns was also a very popular choice in the Police Department; you only had to be at City Hall last night to see how many Police Officers were there to applaud him.

Congratulations to Chief Burns on his well-deserved appointment.

I was dismayed to see Larry Klein's comments about the new Chief at the council meeting. In qualifying his support for Burns, Klein is quoted in the the Daily Post as saying "I think you need to have an overwhelming reason not to go along with the (City) manager's choice. Applying that, I get around questions like 'Would I have prefered an outsider to an insider? Maybe. I think that organizations need to have outsiders brought in from time to time. ... It's not a criticism, just a question of a new set of eyes." Not exactly a resounding vote of confidence from Klein for the new Chief.

I offer that we apply the same reasoning to Councilman Klein who is currently running for his fourth term on the Palo Alto city council. Maybe we need a new set of eyes in his chair.
Not a criticism - just a question.

Excellent point made about Councilman Klein and his re election efforts. Yes he's an incumbent but that shouldn't be his free pass to serve another term. Not so fast, Larry Klein. This may be the end of the road for you.

Hey, Larry, I think you need to reconsider whether support for witch hunts (PACT) and the officers who beat up Mr. Hopkins quality for an "overwhelming reason" to go along with the appointment of Burns. Add to that Burns' suggestion that we have hold closed meetings and that the PAPD not be completely transparent in their operations and I think we have a pretty good reason to consider a new set of eyes. I am getting quite tired of your old eyes even though I think you have done many good things in your years of service and thank you for your service. I think you missed the boat on this one however.
