Town Square

A push toward solar power, a retreat from natural gas

Original post made on May 20, 2016

Since Palo Alto launched its own electric utility in 1900, its quest for power has involved everything from Belgian-made diesel engines to Lake County geysers belching out energy born beneath the surface of the Earth.

The last time I had solar panels, they ruined my roof! I have a nice new roof now, damned if I'll compromise it again with solar panels!!!

It would help if people would boycott cheesy Chinese panels-- that's all you can get now!

"... they ruined my roof!"

The solar panels didn't ruin your roof. The penetrations into your roof supporting the solar panels did.

Next time find a solar company that started out as a roofing company to do the install.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with your roof and solar installation. Was it done recently or in the 1980's when many unskilled solar water heating system installers flooded the market and damaged the solar water heating industry's reputation? Now there are many qualified firms that provide a warranty against roof damage.

In addition to saving money on utility bills, solar panels lower the roof temperature (about 5 degrees F) which helps cool the building's occupants and reduces air conditioning loads. Web Link

There are over half a million solar installations in CA and the rapid growth is expected to continue.

The solar panels were unstated along with a new roof in 2012. Moisture formed under the panels and slowly destroyed the roof. Just replaced the roof AGAIN (should have lasted 20 years) in Sept 2015.

Total waste of a very large amount of money! Not doing it again until Chinese solar panels are banned!

It's always a good idea to look at how green and sustainable energy production and storage methods can complement the existing system. It'll be good for the whole state if we can convert a big portion of the current production to solar generation.
