Gunn girls basketball refuse to give up despite adversity

Original post made on Jan 29, 2019

Gunn senior Amber Fu knows she might not be around to reap the benefits and that's OK. She was a sophomore with the Titans the last time they qualified for the Central Coast Section girls basketball playoffs and figures there's a chance that will happen again in the near future.

Good article, good program, great kids.

Tom Brady tells the story how he started out in football as the *back-up* quarterback of a high school freshman team that went win-less (at Serra in San Mateo). He didn't start a single game. A team's win-loss record doesn't tell us anything about the potential of the players, even less about their character. Effort and attitude count for a lot more at this level.

I don't know about the current varsity coach, but their tough season was easy to predict by the poor quality coaches Gunn has had in the past, both at the varsity and JV levels. When my daughter played JV basketball 4 years ago, the coach ridiculed the players, taught no skills, and told players that they were so bad they would never get to play again at Gunn as upperclassmen. This coach had never coached before, yet Gunn hired her. Shocking. A parent volunteer would have been 10 times better. When the parents complained to the AD, nothing was done. No wonder the girls have no interest in trying out for the sport anymore. The seeds for their current dismal season were planted years ago with the administration's indifference to the quality of their coaches.

The problem starts at the top with the AD (Athletic Director). Unfortunately, too many Gunn parents do not pay attention to athletics. That is the reason for such an inept AD to be around for this long.

Among the legacy he will be leaving behind, this AD in the last couple of years had neglected to vet two varsity head coaches in football and girls volleyball, who had personal conduct issues. The coaches had to be fired after one season or less, when those issues either came to light or resurfaced with the current athletes.
