KZSU still broadcasting Council meetings; funding uncertain

Original post made by Jeremy Erman, Midtown, on Jan 26, 2021

As part of budget cuts last year, the City Council voted to stop funding Stanford radio station KZSU-90.1 FM's broadcasts of City Council meetings, a move that was criticized at the time as cutting off public access to council meetings. However, at last night's meeting, City Manager Ed Shikada, responding to a public comment, admitted that KZSU was still broadcasting City Council meetings and that talks were underway to find an alternate source of funding for the broadcasts that did not come from the city's General Fund.

City staff said last year that it would cost $20,000 to fund KZSU broadcasts for Fiscal Year 2021, which began in July 2020. Before the pandemic, broadcasts were hosted live from the council chambers at City Hall. Since March 17, 2020, all City Council meetings have taken place online in response to the governor's Executive Order N-29-20.
