The fact that he was armed, but it appears that his firearm was not used shows that this can be done by someone who is unarmed also.

Thankful that the guard was able to prevent the theft and that he did not have to use the firearm. If only this happened more often.

It seems that the thieves in these types of crimes are inevitably driving away in luxury vehicles like Lexus SUVs, etc.

The San Francisco Chronicle just ran an article where drug dealers were laughing that in the worst case scenario, if they are caught, persecuted, and convicted, they are out of jail within a few months and back on the street selling - often making $350,000+ a year.

In California, crime does pay, it seems.

All high-end stores should have locked front doors with authorized entrance protocols. This will prevent the entry of both single and multiple looters.

The sight of suspected looters wearing hoodies and entering prestige-label stores is never a good sign.

The best strategy is not to let them enter to begin with.

As for who they are, where they came from, and ethnicity is easily verified from witness accounts, police reportage, and court proceedings.

Did the automated license plate readers get their license plate numbers? If not, is Stanford Shopping Center going to install some?

This is what happens when you elect Progressive/Liberals to office in Sacramento. Laws are passed making crimes like this a misdemeanor. A slap on the wrist similar to a parking ticket and it keeps getting worse as the perps are getting bolder and bolder every day knowing full well nothing will happen to them. Keep this in mind when casting your vote during the next election cycle. Want to see it change? Then vote for someone other than the failures we have in office ruining the state. One party has been in charge in Sacramento for decades. It's time to clean house from the top down.

City Council recently approved a limited deployment of license plate readers, over strong objections my by many that they constitute profiling. But, they definitely seem warranted given this type of all too frequent mass invasions of retailers in Palo Alto, where all that is known about the perpetrators who attempted this robbery in broad daylight is a description of their cloths, masks and vehicles.

No video? No photos of the cars?

Retail theft is a big issue in any city with high-end shops. It does not matter if you are in California, Florida, or Texas. There is no need to bring politics into this. It's obvious this is the narrative that places like Faux News like to perpetuate.

If you have a good job and generations of your family were not red-lined and kept out of certain neighborhoods I am sure they would be good citizens like those who were given a fair shot at life.

Let's be nice and start to implement generational change. Our middle class has been hollowed out and the gap between rich and poor is worse than ever.

Awesome work by the guard! Can we get a description of the suspects? If not, why not?

@Pierre: suspect descriptions are rarely reported anymore … and even when they are, racial (or skin tone) information is often conspicuously omitted because the so-called “social justice community” for years had objected that such information did more harm than good and merely contributed to racial stereotype reinforcement and/or stigmatization of people of color.

^ This makes sense...retailers should simply scrutinize who they let onto the premises. This is not about racism but rather store security and protection.

It’s time for a big change on current lax laws (State of CA legislature, nothing to do with the police)

Next, police do stake outs and arrest these “crews.”
California gains reputation for law and order.
We have laws, procedures and due process.

I don’t care ethnicity of the criminals but I heard this very AM on KCBS-AM news radio the Alameda County D.A. trying to deflect how she’s soft on criminals, (which she is), partly owing to her misguided notion of “racial equity” by using her power to charge fewer persons of color, or charge them slowly or on lesser charges than deserved, so fewer may be convicted and go to prison.

Youth should be encouraged by their parents, schools, community to avoid gangs and a life of crime.

@PA Streets ... it's actually the narrative on major media outlets across the country. And "red lining" has nothing to do with the crime rate skyrocketing in California. Be nice.

Commentary about liberals/progressives being soft on crime is notable. Seems like the far right elected officials are undermining the rule of law by attacking DOJ and FBI to protect criminal behavior from a certain former POTUS, gloss over insurrectionists attempting to overthrow the government and making zero effort while mass shootings are unrelenting. That commentary is disingenuous at best and reminds me of a Forrest Gump phrase about “something” is as “something” does.
