The Democrats always find alternative sources of tax revenue. Gouging consumers with petty levies is their trademark.
$2.87 is a lot of tax for a pack of cigarettes and like the CA lottery (which was supposed to improve CA public schools), most of the revenue goes towards administrative expenditures.
In contrast, Republican South Dakota has no income tax, no sales tax, no inheritance taxes, and offers secret trusts that protect individuals from creditors.
Like the lyrics in that Beatles song Taxman, the Democrats (along with the British government) will try to tax just about anything including the air we breathe.

I started smoking when cigarettes were 50 cents a pack. Being an early adopter of nasty habits, I had to get a JOB to afford my new teenage habit. I was hoofing it from 4:30 to 6:30 AM delivering the Chronicle and never missed a porch. No bike. Strictly on foot. And Sundays, the inserts had me starting at 3:30. Anybody who would get up at 3:30 on a Sunday to work was surely motivated. The job was 7 days a week. No breaks. That is how much I wanted to keep smoking. It's an addictive scourge that should be outlawed altogether. Now, as a "grup" (any Star Trek fans out there?) I am paying the price. An 8 year old can outrun me and I still sound like I have pneumonia every time I cough, even after having quit over 25 years ago. I hope the tobacco tax quits soon, but you know if that happens they will just transfer it to more gas taxes. More people drive than smoke. *Hint* *Hint* Gav.
