Fish Market developer invokes contentious law to get fast approval of 380-apartment project

Original post made on Aug 3, 2023

“20% of the dwellings in the new development — or 76 apartments — as below-market-rate units”

Below market rate often isn’t affordable. Anything called affordable should have to actually be affordable to someone making minimum wage. Seriously.

I'm so tired of DODO politicians -- Developer Owned Developer Operated -- ruining our communities to support their greedy backers who give us nothing in return.

Someone compared "affordable" BMR rents at Alto Locale and found there was a mere $200 difference on rents of $4,000 a month. Since when did $3800 become "affordable"??

Palo Alto should join other cities to litigate against the state to repeal SB 330 and SB35 Builder’s Remedy. These development firms will then close up as most are opportunistic to take advantage of the weak politicians in California.

Acclaim, Charities, Dividend, Roger Fields, Juno Realty Partners, Far Western Land and Investment Company, N17. Which politicians have received money from these development firms? Remove all of them and place good people in office.

The worst thing is that they get exceptions for housing that isn't really affordable, and don't have any obligations at all after 25 years in a lot of these developments.

Affordable housing should actually be affordable to people who are really in need, and frankly, there should be some component of setting aside what they pay to allow them to get out of poverty over time.

Silver Linings,

Affordable housing is specifically defined in the law and there are 5 gradations covering all income levels. Palo Alto has to learn to navigate the new environment. The developer is clearly willing to negotiate to push the city off its planning requirements that are no longer enforceable.

Please take note for this is not Builders Remedy but Berman’s Remedy. Vote for Lydia Kou and send the developers’ darling packing. Remember to call it what it IS Berman’s Remedy.

If it was “well done”
By DODO ( developer owned developer operated ) by legislators like Mr Berman,
True affordability would of been baked into the housing laws instead it is mostly ignored for 100% of AMI(area median income ) and above which does not address the affordability crisis that faces so many California workers and citizens.
Empowering corporations and big investors over basics such as health, safety wellbeing, education and a living wage has long been associated with the less informed parts of the Republican Party but in California it seems to be the bread and butter of our democratic majority!
