The emergence of Queen Anne homes in Palo Alto can be linked with the opening of Stanford University in 1891, which brought professors from the east and Midwest who decided to build their own homes rather than lease land from Stanford.

Thank you so much for this fascinating article. I love hearing about Palo Alto's history and seeing wonderful photos like these. It would be wonderful to hear about the Duveneck family's history in Palo Alto -- an extraordinary family that gave us so much.

Why are these 19th century architectural designs called Queen Anne?

Queen Anne was a 17th century British sovereign and most designs (i.e. Elizabethan, Victorian, Edwardian) are reflective of the timeframes they were built.
