I want to say that I will start carring a gun in the hope that would be thugs read this and decide against a life of crime. But they are mostly likely not reading this community blog or any blog for that matter. And I most definitely would not carry a gun.
So what next? I can't join the critics of the woman who was robbed at the Midtown ATM. "What was she thinking going to an ATM at 2 AM?" I can tell you what she was thinking. "There's an ATM and I need money." It's that simple. And it should be. And we should not be so willing to give up our freedom, our right to feel safe in our community day or night.
I don't know the answer. I only know it is not being more diligent about locking our doors, carrying guns, being fearful and accepting crime as the new reality of life in Palo Alto.
Keep in mind "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." We could easily win the battle and lose the war.
