I used to be a Jim's Coffee Shop fan (except for the coffee). I love real eggs and REAL hashbrowns.

Dinah's Coffee shop by the pool is good for breakfast and you get your choice or regular or premium coffee. The hashbrowns are the real McCoy.

Denny's, of all places, has real hashbrowns, too. Also, if it isn't real crowded, their food and service can be very good (admittingly, I always leave a $4 tip on my $6 bill) - at least they're very good to me.

There was a place, I don't know if it's still around, I think it was called The Pantry in Los Altos. Real hashbrowns with toast and eggs, coffee for a fair price.

The thing I like about Dinah's Coffee Shop by the pool is that, if you want, there's nothing stoping you from doing a little wake-up call - not with the coffee - but jumping in the pool. They have two nice restrooms with paper towels and a heater-type dryer, so after a plunge in the pool, dry off and then have breakfast.

Now where else can you have a breakfast like that?

You should try Joannie's on California as well as Dinah's Shack on ECR or the Peninsula Downtown on Emerson at Hamilton. Each fits your criterion: good, not too expensive and easy to park.

My kids just love Stacks' in Menlo Park (at Santa Cruz/El Camino). Parking isn't a problem in the lot behind the restaurant, accessible from Oak Grove. But get there early -- by 10AM there's a long wait for a table.

Il Forniao has a great breakfast, though it's a little bit pricier than Cookbook's was. Even the coffee is good there, and they have home fries and awesome omelettes and very light and fluffy pancakes.

Also, I love the break"fust" at Palo Alto Fountain and Grill (aka the Milkshake Store), in downtown PA and at the Stanford Mall.

I generally agree with the above postings. Although you specified the Palo Alto area, I would like to recommend the Los Altos Coffee Shop and its spin off, Brian's in Los Altos.

There's an excellent article about Brian's in the latest PA Weekly. The coffee shop/restaurant is located in the Rancho Shopping Center in Los Altos.

You should check out A Good Morning on El Camino at San Antonio (next to Wells Fargo). Breakfast and lunch only, great food, low prices, friendly staff. Bought and redone top to bottom last year, it is small (about 10 tables plus a few outside), but never gets too crowded except maybe mid Sunday morning. A great find.

Brians (in Los Altos) is "old people's food". Try Hobees instead!

Country Gourmet on ECR at Rengstorff. Not as good as Hobees, but you can actually get a table!

Hobee's is great! I love their coffee cake.

Breakfast is such an oddly personal thing, I don't give recommendations anymore. My crave is good corned beef hash - if I find it, I'll guard the secret (though bribes will be considered).
BTW - Since the PA denny's has been closed close to a year, why does it keep getting plugs for breakfast and/or 24 hour service????? Su Hong's has been working on it with plans to move from El Camino Way to the main drag.
