Incident on El Camino bet. Page Mill & Matadero?

Original post made by Curious, Evergreen Park, on May 6, 2007

Does anyone know what happened late Saturday night, involving several cars? I've never seen so many police cars and an area of several blocks was totally cordoned off, helicopters overhead... Looked very serious.

Someone may have been killed as the scene was being treated as a murder scene. One subject that was involved in the accident left on foot and was apprehended. The birth date of the suspect may have been 11/85.

The vehichle that was flipped near Portage and El Camino was a grey car. The rear of the vehicle was badly damaged

The other vehicle in near the front of the Travel Lodge was a black Mercedes coupe. The Mercedes had the air bag deployed and the drivers side windshield had a head impact mark. The front of the vehicle was badly damaged.

Debris from the accident was covering south bound El Camino from the McDonald's to the Travel Lodge.

A Cinco de Mayo DUI? Some street racing? Who knows. A very bad accident. Someone's life, changed forever.

Suspect Arrested in Felony Hit and Run Crash

On May 6, 2007, shortly after midnight, Palo Alto Police Officers working near Hamilton Avenue and High Street, observed a vehicle driving without head lights attempting to turn the wrong way onto a one-way street. Officers caught up to the vehicle at Churchill and Mariposa, and made contact with the driver, Juan Ruiz, 22, from San Carlos. Ruiz threw the vehicle into drive and fled from the officers into the South Gate area. Ruiz was located a short time later exiting onto El Camino Real where he failed to yield to officers. A chase ensued and was terminated at Grant Avenue and El Camino Real due to Ruiz’ reckless driving and high speeds.

As officers continued south bound on El Camino Real, they observed debris scattered across the roadway in the south bound lanes. Officers saw a small Toyota with significant damage across the center divide in the north bound lanes. The driver and passenger both males, both from Atwater California, appeared to have serious but non life threatening injuries. The Palo Alto Fire Department transported both parties to Stanford Medical Hospital. Also in the vehicle was a small injured Chihuahua which was transported by police to a local veterinarian.

Officers located the suspect’s vehicle several hundred feet south of the victim’s vehicle at Lambert Avenue and El Camino Real. The suspect was not in the vehicle. An area search was conducted and a passing witness informed the police that a Hispanic male was attempting to flag down motorist near Pagemill Road and Juniper Sierra. Officers responded, to the area, located Ruiz who had minor injuries to his arms and leg. Ruiz was arrested by Palo Alto Police officers.

El Camino real was closed between Pagemill Road and Lambert Avenue from shortly after midnight to 5:30 am this morning.
