How much will this cost - and what is being done? Weren't we told that the Police Station was seismically unsafe and that we need a new $80M public safety building?

Kate, When the Pa high student had the explosives in his back pack.
The PA police brought it back to the station, where it exploded in the holding room for. That would be the room where they hold people.
People and explosions, I was learned do not mix well. But we all know Palo Alto is ABOVE AND BETTER THAN the rest of you. So having a bomb that the cops carried into there station that blew up, is nothing to care about? Nothing worth telling the truth about?
What will that do to your 80 million dollar building? Maybe the city should spend 80 million more to make a building that THEY CAN"T screw up. NO HOW, NO WAY. Idiot proof.
You think an 80 million dollar building is going to change how this city is run? How poor the police service is? Just a better place to give the PA approved cops a nicer place, to collect overtime and do special projects.
While the real PA cops are out doing the work of 3 cops with substandard equipment and excuse ,why you have to do more with less. BECAUSE all the money was wasted an given to a small group at the top.
I know it's a matter of pride. And has nothing to do with truth, justice or good service.

This is pretty outrageous. We're about to spend 80 million dollars on a new building, and they decide to remodel the old one?

Anon, Remember the whole city hall screw up. Remember all the work done to a fairly new building. Millions of dollars..
CPA JUST can't seem to do anything well? Or for a fair price?
Goes with the fix the streets, then tear them up 1 week later?
Priceless LEADERSHIP? Hey JOE HOW abot a law against that?
There already is one?
So joe is it legal to mismanage public funds, while texting or talking on your CELL PHONE? or only if you are driving a car?
A truck the same as a car or NEXT BILL from you will cover cars?
Full size or small trucks? 1 bill for each make of truck?
Is it more illegal if you are driving a import truck and do not have an in with THE CPA? Is the fine greater or just get shot on the site. Handcuffed to a bullitn board in East Palo Alto. Is not that how the PAPD works?
Giving millions to fools does not provide better service, Just makes for a better fools club house.

Does anyone know what the remodel is? Maybe it is a simple $5000 remodel that needs to be done. Remember, the new building is about 4 years away. Let us not start to "go crazy" like this fireman does with anything that is connected with the city. Let's find out the facts and go from there please.

Re: Tim's friendly comment.
Not exactly going crazy, but living near the city hall and seeing the debris + portable construction management office for several weeks, I'm guessing this is at least a $100k+ remodel.
There's also been a several week remodel at the building housing the development offices. I've been there before (the permit center) and it was already quite nice, looked modern, had lots of new computers with flat panel screens, etc.
As someone who's street floods every time there is 0.25 inches of rain, and the city quoted $25k to fix the stormdrain (add an outlet at the lowpoint of the street), it's frustrating to see money thrown at a building set for demolition.

Anon,
The old police station may not go to waste if people speak up. The "permit center" across the street is leased space, as is the basement of WaMu, across the other street. The employees in both locations could move to the old police station, but I'm sure that won't happen unless there is a public outcry.

When the police move, city hall is not being torn down. Other departments (in the city) will take over that space.

"living near the city hall and seeing the debris + portable construction management office for several weeks, I'm guessing this is at least a $100k+ remodel". "Does anyone know what the remodel is?"
The construction material at City Hall is for remodel work on the whole of City Hall not just the Police Department. In fact the bathroom facilities on A level are being refurbished, and the rooms next to the cafeteria.
Meanwhile, this weekend the lobby of the Police Department is being realigned - minor changes.
The old Police Building will not go to waste. In fact they are counting on renting it out for some of the money to cover the Certificates of Participate to build the new Public Safety Building.
