Can anyone recommend a female therapist for a depressed teen?

Original post made by Reed, Midtown, on Jan 9, 2009

My adult sister is going through a divorce, and her 14 year old daughter is, not surprisingly, having a very difficult (increasingly dangerous) time.

I'm pursuing several avenues of referral, and I thought, why not post it right here, to my neighbors?

Ask and seek help from your school counselors

Make sure you hire someone with an MD after their name, MFCCs have only minimal training and supervision.

Most mood disorders have a biological cause and cure.

MDs prescribe drugs. If it's a situational depression, which it sounds like, then talk-therapy is fine. A PhD or a MFCC can be fine--as long as she can establish a good rapport with the girl. Often people with long-term issues will see an MD once a month for supervision of the drug treatment and then a PhD or MS for more frequent talk therapy.

Often insurance covers some treatment. In which case, you'll need to get the approved list of therapists. Then conduct some phone interviews to see who might be a fit. Different therapists have different takes on things--cognitive behaviorists, for example, might be right for changing a bad habit. This sounds more like a talking things out.

Good luck.
