Dominating Win for the Titans

Original post made by Sports Reporter, Gunn High School, on Feb 19, 2009

The Gunn Boys' Basketball squad finished up its regular season Tuesday night in emphatic fashion with a 69-30 win over Cupertino on "Senior Night" at Gunn.

If there was any thought that there might be a letdown by Gunn after their emotional win over Palo Alto on Friday night, the Titans erased any thoughts of that with one of their most impressive efforts of the season.

"I was happy with the way everybody played tonight," said Gunn Head Coach Chris Redfield. "All season long we preached about keeping teams under 40 points and this season we achieved that goal."

Overall Gunn allowed 39.8 points a game and in De Anza League play the average dropped to 36.5.

The Pioneers actually led 6-2 and only trailed 13-12 late in the first period before the Titans went into their patented defensive lockdown mode that saw them go on a 26-1 run on key baskets by Avery Reiss as Gunn jumped out to a 39-13 late in the first half.

Gunn took a 40-15 lead at halftime and the second half it was more of the same as Max Minowitz, Mike Shubat and Ryan Miller played airtight defense and Gus Brennan, Kyle Perricone and Stephan Castro used their height to pound inside to extend the lead to 58-25.

The final period saw the Titans of tomorrow get valuable game action as Jon Rea, Bharat Reddy, Josh Jackson, Ryan Petigura, Hemanth Kondapalli and Simon Hauser build on the lead.

In the final minutes, Petigura, Kondapalli and Jackson all scored to put Gunn up 69-26 before Cupertino scored the final points to round out the scoring.

On the night four Titans hit double figures as Castro and Perricone each scored a dozen followed by Minowitz with 11 and Brennan with 10.

Reiss added eight with Jackson tallying seven. Rounding out the scoring were Reddy with three, and Rea, Petigura and Kondapalli with two each.

Gunn finishes up the year at 11-1 in De Anza League play and 22-5 overall and will find out Sunday when they will play in the Central Coast Section Playoffs.
