A total of 13 seniors from the two teams were honored in the Senior Night ceremony Wednesday night. But then it was down to business for the league champion Titans as they produced their best scoring effort of the season. Four players scored in double digits; two had double-doubles; all players who suited up scored; and the team shot 49% from the floor.
Gunn started the night with a 14-1 run and ended the first quarter ahead 17-6. The Titans allowed Lynbrook the first basket of the second period, but then went on another red-hot run to go up 34-8 before Lynbrook fought back, and the half ended with Gunn up 39-18.
Gunn exploded out of half-time to score 14 straight points and then outscored Lynbrook at the end of the quarter 13-7, which brought the score to 66-25 heading into the final period. Lynbrook played even with Gunn at the beginning of the quarter, matching Gunn 4-4; but the Titans then scored 11 of the last 13 points of the game, including the last six. The final score was 81-31.
The defense was also hot, as Gunn collected 37 turnovers, led by Jasmine’s 13 steals and Rimona Cartun’s eight. This was the 17th time this season the Titans forced 30 or more turnovers and the 19th time that they held their opponent under 35 points (only once having allowed 45).
Jasmine Evans led all scorers, matching her jersey number with 24 points and adding a season-high 13 steals. Taylor McAdam tallied her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jackie Evans and Tamar Cartun added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Also scoring were Rimona Cartun with six points, Rachael Clark with four, Julia Maggioncalda and Marie Volpe with two each, and Sophie Shevick with one.
Gunn will have a week off before post-season play begins.
