Red light camera?

Original post made by H sund, Old Palo Alto, on Jun 4, 2009

I saw a camera above the intersection of Deer Park and Page Mill today as I hit the yellew and it turned red about a second before I went through. Was it a red light camera or just a monitor? I guess in 6-8 weeks I will know. I was driving the only car I own with a front plate.

Any one know if there are active red light cameras on page mill?

I don't think there are any red light cameras in Palo Alto. More likely, the camera controls the red light signal.

However, I urge you to be more careful next time. There are way too many car crashes (too many of them fatal) on Page Mill Road.

If the light was red a full second before you went through, then you had plenty of time to stop. And cross traffic may already be starting to go.

To my knowledge Palo Alto doesn't have any red light cameras, but I'm not sure about Page Mill. I know Oregon Expressway is a county road. Not sure about it after ECR.

Many places that do have red light cameras also have warning signs. I don't know if that is a requirement, but Page Mill and Deer Park has no signs.

Can someone in the know chime in on this?

We don't have them yet. But they are coming. PAPD will sometimes have the County "roll back" ala Tivo the intersection cameras when they are looking for a subject.

The VTA toll system for 101 will probably have the rate system. It will observe you (license plate recognition, or RFID for FastTrack users) at a certain point entering the highway. If you pass the next camera/antenna too soon (rate = distance / time), an automatic ticket will be generated. Not only do you get to pay for the privilege of using the carpool lane, you get dinged for going to fast.

Many states are moving to ban these systems.

Most of the systems are privately owned and operated. The government just gets a cut from their operation. An easy sell...

The traffic camera system in the UK is now automatically dispatching officers when a wanted vehicle is seen by the system. No more driving on a expired tag or without insurance. Miss a car payment? The nearest officer is dispatched, and updated on the vehicle's movements while en-route.

They also have officers with vehicles with poll mounted HD cameras looking into vehicles for people talking on cell phones.

When the dispatched officer pulls you over, they play a clip of you in full zoom lens HD glory asking how you would like to plead.

Orwell would be proud.
