Is this really something to be proud of? Let's hang price tags on our houses like Minnie Pearl's hat. The one who overpaid the most gets a trophy.

Yes, I think this is something to be proud of. Not everyone can afford to live here and many rent due to that fact. Even Paly graduates cannot afford Palo Alto homes. If you have such a bad outlook, Fleeced, then move to the midwest and buy a 9000sf house for the same price. When you find how different the subculture is there, how complacent they are, and how bad the weather is, you will want to move back here, despite less square footage. This is a great place with great people! That's why many famous people choose to live here. There's movement, opportunity, and creativity here. Why not live around successful people?

And how come Atherton, Hillsborough, Los Altos, Monte Sereno, Portola Valley are not on the list? Their median home prices are way higher than PA's. The statistics is crap.

Ada, Aol had P.A as number 71... Crap is an under statement... PA online already removed this FACT once...

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics.

Berfore you start foaming at the mouth, try reading the article and learning some elementary statistical methods. The comparison is based on the "price of a 2,200-square-foot home with four bedrooms, 2½ baths and an attached garage" in each community. This provides a common basis of comparison to show how much you would pay for the same article in different markets.

Consider: which store offers better bargains, the one that charges 40 cents for a pound of potatoes, or the one that sells a pound of kumquats for 85 cents?

I don't know where you get the idea the people here are so great. That's part of the reason I'd love to move out of the bay area. I've lived in other parts of the country and the sense of community seems to flow much more fluidly elsewhere. I find Palo Alto to have even more of a Dick Cheney style mindset than the midwest.

Tom, The water boarding of citizens and city employees is only the idea of the people running the place. The good people in Palo Alto just sit there doing and say nothing..

Right, the good citizens of PA say nothing. Except when confronting someone about a petty little detail, AKA being a behindhole. No community, PALY and Gunn are awkward, sorted, sifted and processed social experiments. Besides, it's stupid from a tax perspective to finance a home over $1 million.
