Palo Alto's Bid to Boost Tourism Falls Short

Original post made by Resident, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Feb 17, 2010

From the Wall Street Journal

PALO ALTO—City leaders in this enclave, which Stanford University and many Silicon Valley executives call home, are trying to bolster the local economy by persuading more business travelers to stay for the weekend. But so far, few visitors have taken the bait.

Dubbed Destination Palo Alto, the project—which launched in late 2008—was designed to encourage visitors to remain in town from Friday to Sunday, a time when traffic to area hotels tends to drop. City officials also wanted more visitors to stay in hotels in Palo Alto itself rather than in neighboring Silicon Valley towns.
