Budget and Consolidation

Original post made by David, another community, on Mar 31, 2010

Each of the citys in Santa Clara County has grown since most were started, and the government for each of these cities has grown. Yes, some cities are unique, but they still have the same core issue to deal with. Police, Fire, Public Works, Utilities, Community Services/Arts, etc. The problem is that there is way too much dupilcation in each city. If California wants to truely tackle the growing money issue that every level of government is dealing with, the consider consolidation. Merge the cities into larger units and reduce the duplication.

Good idea.

Now go try to sell it to Palo Altans. Good luck. After all they are "different" and "special".... At least in their own minds.

Bad idea. The larger the bureaucracy, departments, and contracts, the less efficient it will be, not more. 95% of the time, big cities are less efficient than mid-sized cities. Los Angeles should break up into a bunch of smaller cities, for example. It would surely be more efficient.
