Bullying

Original post made by Sandra, Barron Park, on Jan 14, 2011

We are new to the Palo Alto school district. I have a daughter in the third grade at Juana Briones. She has been being bullied by a girl in her class, since school started. We have talked with the teacher repeatedly and talked with the school counselor. The girls have talked with the counselor. Nothing seems to stop this child's behavior. She has threatened violence against my child, if she tells the teacher or gets her into trouble. The teacher told me again today after I complained, that the girls need to talk it out. That this is normal third grade girl, behavior. I have had enough and told the teacher no, I don't think this is normal or acceptable behavior. Am I crazy? Are there rules and laws about this kind of bullying? My daughter is truly suffering. I left a message detailing what has been going on for the principle. I don't expect to hear from him until Tuesday. We shall see how he handles it. I have been here before with an older, now grown son and I am not going to let it happen again. Thanks for any input.

I had a similar problem with my son in elementary school (in another PA school, not Briones). The principal was no help. I ended up pulling my son out of the school and home schooling him for the rest of the year.

I believe that as long as there is no actual physical violence, they won't do anything. I hope I am wrong and that the principal is helpful in your case.

Don't hesitate either to go above the principal directly to the school district if you are not taken seriously.

Good luck.

Girls are so vicious these days and it starts even in first grade. I know of a 4th grade teacher who taught 8th grade but said the girls were too psycho in middle school so he decided to teach another grade instead. In 3rd grade, I volunteered in class, and a "mean girl" stared me down. A third grader trying to intimidate an adult. But look no further than the moms for the source of the misbehavior.

Depends on the school principal regarding your issue. Unfortunately, I have heard of principals who are not effective with these situations and parents end up having to pull their children from the school. You should be at least allowed to switch classrooms but that won't help at recess.

Fortunately, Jordan Middle School is tough on bullying. I am not sure about Terman or JLS.
