ISO Small business advice, please!

Original post made by new small business, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on May 24, 2011

I am looking to start a business. I was counseled to incorporate, which I did, through an internet service (linked from Nolo Press).

Now I have to fill out the "statement of information" for the state. I am not doing business yet, I am only preparing. The statement of information requires a street address for the business executive office. I have a PO Box, but I am only allowed to use that for the mailing address. The internet service is serving as my agent in the event of service of process (i.e., if someone sues), so I have an address there, that's not the issue. The only problem is that I need a street address to fill out the first line of this state-mandated form.

I am a very private person and do not wish to put my home address on this public document. (I have other compelling -- not nefarious -- reasons for privacy, but I don't feel that's anyone's business!) I'm not in business yet anyway, it's not like I'm doing business out of my home, either. The business plan will initially involve the internet and consulting anyway, there will be no business conducted at my home.

I was advised by an attorney that I may use someone else's address as the street address,I don't have to be in business there, so I asked a friend with a business in a nearby town. The friend was worried about having to make disclosures and also thought I would have to get a business license in that town.

My statement of information is now overdue (the internet filer misinformed me about the dates to start -- I'm beginning to wonder if it's part of trying to sell me more expensive compliance services -- and I don't know what to do. I wish now that I had not filed to incorporate until I was farther along in this process.

Anyone out there concerned about privacy and have a home business? -- have any advice?

Are there "incubator" locations locally geared to help small businesses start up -- I thought I've seen such a place on the news -- where I could get a free VIRTUAL space, i.e., use the street address as my executive office to help me overcome this hurdle? I have also read about "real" virtual offices where someone basically rents their address to you and scans and emails you the mail they get for you!

Advice please!!!

Here's a blog post about small home-based business owners' concerns about using their address, but apparently they are not Californians, because the CA Atty General's office told me I was required by statute to give a street address for the executive office (again, not the address for the service of process, which is different).

ISO solutions! Thanks!

I need an address where I know I will get any mail the secy of state decides to send there instead of to my "mailing" address...)

Although the prospect of free rent is appealing! ;-)

Instead of a PO Box, get a mail box at the UPS store (fka Mailboxes Etc I think). You can also use their street address for non USPS delivery, and I imagine for anything else you like. More costly than a PO Box, but I think it would solve your problem.

Thanks --it looks like there are some "virtual" office spaces for rent, too, where they have a receptionist, conference rooms, etc. The problem for me is just that the the Mailboxes etc and the virtual offices are all too expensive. I"m starting up online on a shoe string, and I just don't have money for things like that (house poor in Palo Alto if you know what I mean). The PO Box is not that expensive and we've had it for decades.
