He's getting them off the streets and into the MMA ring

Original post made on Sep 7, 2011

Nestled in the back of Undisputed Boxing Gym in San Carlos, behind a large exercise capoeira class, seven young fighters work on their jabs in the boxing ring while their coach stands at the ropes and films their form to be analyzed later. For the past year, former mixed martial arts prizefighter Eugene "The Wolf" Jackson, an East Palo Alto native, has used MMA as a means of teaching kids the skills and mentality to win in the ring and escape the streets of East Palo Alto.

Good luck, Mr Jackson. I hope you can help make a difference.

There are quite a few other martial arts instructors in the area with similar goals. The real differences with Jackson seem to be that he is from EPA and that he has his students living with him. He seems to be going the extra step for these kids and that is great. I'm just not sure if he can take on many more people.

Does anyone have any recommendations for martial arts schools in Palo Alto where the teachers show a true concern for the students' development, rather than their personal profitability? Almost every place I've seen around here seems to be a watered-down profit-center.

Dear Mr. Jackson and crew,

I have the deepest admiration for you and the group. I grew up on the other side of the freeway (PA), and although I work a good job, I'm a mess now (probably know what I mean). The story above gives hope and is inspiring. By way of this note, I'm sending best wishes, positive energy, and the prayers that you and the group have success in every area of life!

Thank you for the inspiration!

I would like to suggest visiting the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple. They offer classes in at least kendo, judo and karate.

Good luck.
