Comcast Speed is Down all over Palo Alto

Original post made by alex, Midtown, on Mar 14, 2013

Comcast confirmed this to me. It may be intermittent, but now I don't think so. They called ME to replace two modems last week.

The tech came out not knowing anything about the modem replacement or anything else about the problem. I called their office and they didn't know anything.

I finally talked to a supervisor who confirmed a city wide problem not related to servers. So...

Not only is the speed S-L-O-W, it intermittently goes down completely. This is just unacceptable for a high-tech center like Palo Alto!

ComCast needs some competition, and Palo Alto needs some choices.

You do have a choice. AT&T and others offer high speed internet via your phone lines. Some new startups are offering high speed internet over the air (for reasonable prices).

choice,

Comcast (and ATT) need to be broken up. Together they have a monopoly, in effect.
I can't remember the last time we broke a company up since we broke ATT up. Reagan etc... did a job on this country.

Sonic.net is a good option for DSL. The speeds aren't as fast as cable, but the price is much cheaper than AT&T. They don't cap your speeds - you get whatever you can get at your location. In my location, sadly that's only about 2.5mbps, but at least I'm not paying for 3, 6 or more but only getting 2. Plus, the phone service is a great value. They're headquartered up in the Santa Rosa area.

I agree the lack of internet choices is frustrating. I was thinking of trying cable for the faster speeds, but hearing this makes me want to reconsider!

Haven't had any problems here in Duveneck/St. Francis neighborhood.

My Comcast speeds have been painfully slow, and packet loss has been high, despite packet loss in my internal network being practically zero.

It is incredibly annoying that even bum-standard webpages are slow to load.

There is clearly something wrong with Comcast's service.
I wonder if the City can do something about it-- this has to be violating whatever contract they signed to get the right-of-way in the city...

Yep. I have had the same problem for a few weeks now on Emerson St. Intermittent dropping - recovery sometimes taking up to 30 seconds. Completely unworkable. :(

Call or write the city council and urge them to move forward with Google Fiber. If nothing else, the threat will put pressure on Comcast to get its act together..
