When even a $99 cell phone is able to record HD video, I don't understand why the entire world is equipped with security cameras recording video as if it's still the 1960s. Really ... if the video is bad enough to preclude reading license plates, why have security cameras at all?

Agreed!
If companies can not invest a couple thousand dollars in first rate surveillence equipment, then the police should not both investigating.

Joe,
These companies are run by MBAs (glorified accountants). They need to promote some of those geeky engineers to higher levels.

How about blaming the perpetrators rather than the victim?

So a gas station puts up cameras, but they aren't able to record the single best identifying image, one of the car lic plates? That's like putting up a camera in Macy's that doesn't show images of people's faces.

I feel bad for the gas station owner, since I'm sure the manufacturer has already been paid.
However, OPEC rips US off every day. I don't have much sympathy.

While the article doesn't specifically says so, I would assume "Police were unable to read license plates in the video footage" because the perps covered them with a piece of cardboard, etc. I don't want to give the perps too much credit, but if they can figure out how to damage a pump to get free gas they must be smart enough to cover license plate when they know they are being video tapped. Common sense here people.
