This story touched my heart, as I had been thinking of veterans of various wars yesterday. The Vietnam vets did NOT come home to cheers or salutes or parades; the dead soldiers did not receive any signs of respect, even. It was a travesty the way the wounded were treated by the VA, the way the MIAs were treated by the US gov't, the way the returning vets were treated by society here at home.
It is also shameful that so many employers do not give Veteran's Day off-- my husband's included. They justify that they give Memorial Day off instead! Memorial Day used to be called Armistice Day in honor of the day the armistice ending WWI was signed. Veteran's Day honors ALL veterans-- this day should not be ignored, but respected!
