Also highly in need of mentioning: Job Train, in East Palo Alto, led by a saint called Karen, who patiently tutors to prepare and pass a GED (and pay for the test), and prepare for a job and get the job.

This is a wonderful story highlighting the local efforts to address EPA's problems, which are most effective compared to well-meaning efforts from outside the community. I see companies paying their workers to come to EPA and do community service consisting of park cleanups, housing repairs, and garden installations. These are nice, but the community really needs funds to support its own efforts. I'd like to see companies donate money to EPA's own grassroots projects instead.

I don't get it. Why are prisoners not being educated in prison when they have nothing to do so that when they get out they are set up with a job and a real chance of making it?

Currently, parolees are literally dumped out on the street, and we all seem to think they will magically become contributing members of society with no money, no skills, and no job (or even a chance at getting a job).

I guess that's 'merica for you.
