Why is World Music Day the same day as Stanford graduation and Fathers Day?

Time for the annual reminder
Stanford graduation ends at 12:30, PA world music festival starts at 3:00. Plenty of time to attend both

If University in downtown can be closed on a day when Stanford expects lots of visitors, then it can be closed permanently to traffic for a great pedestrian experience with the traffic being moved to other routes.
The fact that Stanford traffic needs to use University and that retailers don't want to lose Stanford visitors to downtown is obviously a moot point.
Parking on University as well as the traffic makes it a very unpleasant place to peruse the ambience. A pedestrian thoroughfare with parking elsewhere would be much better.
Oh, and this is a busy weekend for sport, many people will be visiting downtown sports venues to watch the World Cup and want to stay longer than 2 hours for the next few weeks while the World Cup matches are being played.

The FBI always gets its man.....Stanford always gets its way. This is how it has always been for at least 80 years.
I have lived in many college towns, and always loved them, until I moved here and had to live with Stanford's interference in Palo Alto.

Stanford commencement has been the same weekend for over 100 years. Can't dump the blame on them as much as the bashers would enjoy doing.

@again - I realize graduation ends before World Music Day begins, but the street closure starts at 11 am. And it is pretty customary to celebrate with the graduate after the graduation, WMD makes that impossible to do in downtown Palo Alto. I'm sure the restaurants in Menlo Park appreciate it though! I also feel bad for those from out of town who suddenly find the downtown area of the town where their child attends school is closed. What would happen if Berkeley closed University on the day of graduation?
@resident - why wouldn't Stanford want to use University for traffic? The reason the street is named University is that it leads to one.

Agree. this is idiotic. One more reason not to vote for Claude Ezran. Anyone who would do that to do the city does not deserve to be on Council. Find another day for your festival, duh.

palo alto resident,
by 11, commencement has begun, so they should not longer need university. Although most intelligent visitors would use Embarcadero, not University if they are familiar with the area, if not they will follow Stanford's directions on how to get there which does not include University.
The festival is fun and well attended, so I am sure the restaurants will make out fine.

@again, I'm sure the festival is fun and well attended (we never go because its on Father's Day and its not what any of the fathers in our family choose to do on Father's Day), I just think it is really odd to close downtown on a day when there are so many out of town visitors who would like to celebrate with their new grads.
World Music Day is celebrated in the rest of the World on June 21st.

Palo Alto resident, do you recall a similar thread last year? Apparently, some chose to try act as if critics had no right to criticize. You're right - World Music Day is generally held closer to midsummer, so I'm not sure eh again this year it was rolled into Stanford commencement/Father's Day weekend. For some people, all three events on the same weekend is a drag, for others a delight.

While apparently, some others chose to try act as if no one has a right to criticize criticisms ;-)
Come enjoy the music whether there might be a better day to hold it on or not. Any day it might be held would irk someone and conflict with something. We celebrate father's day by going to the festival.
