In an age when faster is better and attention spans are shortening, when people are hustling and smartphones demand quicker responses, the slow process of gardening can seem countercultural. To some, it may even seem unnecessary and inefficient.

There are several community gardens in Palo Alto not mentioned in the article. It would be good to know if these are city run or private. Anna - can you let us know?

THere's a garden behind the midtown shopping center. There's a garden at the old Ventura elementary. And there was one at the church at Middlefield and East Meadow that is now gone.

It would be shame to lose the other 2 if south palo alto has no "Official" community gardens.

The Ventura garden is part of the City of Palo Alto Community Gardens. It was created and funded by the Ventura Neighboorhood Association but open to all Palo Alto residents. It is still part of the City's Community Garden program but currently managed by the PACCC. Please see the City of Palo Alto Community Garden Website for information on being added to that waiting list. The garden behind the midtown shopping center is run by Acterra not the City and is on private land. The garden that use to be at Middlefield and East Meadow was also on private land run by the Church.

The City has been working on a Master Plan for Parks, Open Space, Recreation and facilities that is looking at possibilities for more Community gardens in the South side of Palo Alto and other areas where they might be suitable.
