Critical Mass in Palo Alto?

Original post made by SeattleExpat, Charleston Meadows, on Jul 23, 2018

Around 9pm on Friday July 20th I drove past many groups of a dozen or more bicyclists riding along El Camino into El Camino Way, then down East Meadow and continuing across the tracks. The scary thing was that even though it was dark, about 1/3 of the cyclists had no lights, and many were riding out into traffic lanes (even the oncoming lane!) doing wheelies straight at oncoming cars and so forth. Could this be Critical Mass come to Palo Alto?

Many bicyclists believe they have a sense of entitlement because they are using pedal-power and not polluting the environment.

That's all very fine except when they combine arrogance alongside the crusade.

Being moving vehicles, bicyclists should adhere to the same rules of the road as automobiles.

San Jose Bike party came through...happens once a month and about 1 x per year the route leads them up north. It's a very fun time. Regroup stations have food trucks and a techno dance floor :)

Too many bysickle riders in Palo Alto. Make driving hard for driver. Almost hit one yesterday.

I'm beginning to see a lot of the Mountain View bike shares (not Google bikes but see them too) left around Palo Alto? Are we allowed to use them here?

Not MV bikes, private companies own/run them, but by permission of MV. I think you're free to use them, but they're not free. Just download the app and hop on if you want though. The intro ride is a buck for the green ones I think. I've been tempted to rent one just to ride it around the block so I don't have to stare at it.

Were you the same perplexed driver who attempted to make an illegal U-turn while crossing the double-yellow lines at the intersection of El Monte and Springer in Los Altos the other day?

While peddling along Springer towards ECR, I noticed that cars along that 2-way stop were lined-up for blocks while a confused driver hesitated for what seemed an eternity, meanwhile allowing countless vehicles from El Monte Avenue proceed.
