I am not a victim...just a witness. Most outsiders (aka 'educated' white folks) cannot comprehend a life they were not accustomed to. So they read books, attend liberal-minded seminars & watch 'Roots' & 'Amistad' for their apparent comprehension.

^^^ You are absolutely correct & I suspect that most upscale white folks would be afraid to even venture out that way. Then again, there is probably no reason for them to.

When I attended UC Berkeley I resided near the Oakland border (around MacArthur Boulevard) and everyday was a 'ghetto experience' with regular muggings/assaults, public drunkenness/heavy drug usage & a 24/7 greeting from the countless hookers who lined the streets. It was kind of like that old Lou Reed song "Walk On the Wild Side'.

Looking back, I wouldn't want that 'college experience' for my children but since I put myself through school it was the best I could do & afford at the time. I managed to survive but many of the regular inhabitants did not.

^^^ I actually had one on those! He looked just like the Brady Bunch father & always ended his lecture with "power to the people".

Divided We Exist is right. I hang my head in shame for I am a white person who, although tries to understand and has worked in underserved communities for many years, is always told I don't get it. I don't get it, that's true. I will never get it. My family was persecuted and ran for their lives to escape certain death. But that doesn't matter because I'm white and it's not the same.
The world is a disgrace right now and one can only hope we all come to realize that we are ALL humans and we're in this together. Or at least I hope we are. If not, divided we don't exist. Divided we fall.
