Town of Atherton becomes a hotbed for prep basketball

The elite teams in the Central Coast Section, the eight teams chosen Wednesday for the boys Open Division, includes three teams from Atherton, one of the country's most expensive places to live.

weird opener. just talk about the kids and their sport, no need for sweeping assumptions about race or socioeconomics. reads like a kid wrote it for an in class essay.

Actually the story lede, in journalistic parlance, draws the reader into the story -- quite nicely in this instance. There are no participation trophies at the high school level and not every boy and girl gets their name in the paper ...if the community is lucky enough to still have a newspaper or website that still covers HS sports and a consummate pro like this man to write the stories.
