Really? "last of the surviving 24-hour restaurants"? L&L Hawaiian Barbecue right next door is open 24 hours.

I mean, if you're going to base the story as the "last 24 hr restaurant" it should really be the last 24 hour restaurant.

Apparently, Shinola is gone for good.

So we lost the 40+ year institution University Art so we could have Shinola for three years? Greedy commercial landlords and City of Palo Alto working together to improve the quality of life in Palo Alto. Thanks for nothing.

The last REAL 24 hour restaurant/coffee shop in Palo Alto was the University Creamery in downtown Palo Alto.

That was where students, graveyard shift workers, bohemians, book readers & late shift restaurant employees went to grab a bite to eat, meet with their friends/colleagues or just hang out in solitude.

A Happy Donut joint on ECR doesn't quite cut it in terms of overall ambience and ease of accessibility...neither does a Hawaiian-themed restaurant.

There used to be another 24-hour coffee shop on the corner of ECR & Santa Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park. Long gone but another good late night diner.

Lyon's on ECR was always my favorite a million years ago.
But that may have been just across the line in Los Altos.
