Prep football: Nine games to choose from this weekend

Original post made on Oct 20, 2021

St. Francis has a lot of rivals. With the historical continuity that exists in the West Catholic Athletic League, the Lancers have a long relationship with all WCAL teams. But Bellarmine, the team St. Francis plays this week, is No. 1.

At Paly, where's Josh Butler been? He was injured early in the season, but they always talked like he'd be back. Now he's never even mentioned. He was pretty dominant the past two seasons.

You said it, Mr. SL. Varsity this year is like the Cleveland Browns, lots of talent/but lots of injuries. Butler played well in the 1st half last game, but needed to take himself out without paying in the 2nd half.

@Sails - Who else, that would be considered a major contributor such as Butler, is injured? Seems they have most everyone playing.

DB's, LB's, WR's, multiple other RB's, linemen. But true, every team has injuries and being able to step up for your team is part of football.

There is absolutely no reason or logic for a football player to risk getting further or permanently injured playing something minor like a high school football game.

This could end a promising career on a much higher level or discourage college recruiters.

Then again, there are probably very few local high school football players who will ever play on a collegiate or professional level so perhaps it doesn't matter.

All athletes risk career-ending injuries and the final decision whether to play or not to play should be left up entirely to them based on the recommendations of their trainers and attending sports medicine physicians (providing these individuals do not have any vested interests in the game itself).

The coach should have absolutely no say in this matter as his sole job is to motivate and inspire youth in a purely voluntary sport.

When I said 'step up', I meant the next people on the depth chart, e.g., the 2nd string players, like the Cleveland Browns RB's last night. No one is making peninsula HS football players play while injured. Sorry, if I was misunderstood.
